Prime Minister inaugurates 60 MW Tuirial Hydro Power Project in Aizwal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 60 MW Tuirial hydropower project in Aizwal, Mizoram. It is the Central Government’s first large hydropower project to be commissioned in Mizoram.
With this, Mizoram has become the third power surplus state in North-East after Sikkim and Tripura.
FACTFILE – Tuirial dam
- Tuirial dam is an earth fill and gravity dam near Kolasib in the state of Mizoram in India.
- The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production.
- Tuirial Hydel Project is the 2nd largest earthen dam and the largest in India. The height of the dam is 97 Metres.
- Tuirial Hydel Dam has two 30MW Turbine. The dam is estimated to produce 250 million units of electrical energy every year.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the 60 MW Tuirial Hydro Electric Project (THEP) project costing Rs 913 crore in 2010
Losar Festival celebrated in Ladakh
The 10 day long traditional Losar Festival has been started in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir to mark the beginning of New Year in the Himalayan Region.
Losar is the Tibetan word for ‘new year’.

India’s first National and Transportation University at Vadodara
The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the proposal of Railway Ministry to establish the first ever National Rail and Transport University in Vadodara to enhance the human resources and build capability.
The first academic programme is expected to be launched in July 2018.
Methanol Economy Fund under NITI Aayog
NITI Ayog is going to establish a Methanol Economy Fund to promote the production and use of clean fuel.
The fund worth Rs 4000-5000 crore will be utilized for producing cheaper, safer and pollution free methanol fuel by converting high ash content coal and stranded gas assets into methanol.

India and Myanmar ink pact on Rakhine state
India and Myanmar inked an agreement on restoration of normalcy and development of the Rakhine state from where thousands of Rohingya Muslims recently fled following incidents of violence against the community.Signed between Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and Myanmar Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Soe Aung in Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw, this is the first government to government pact inked by Myanmar with a cooperation partner focused on socioeconomic development and livelihood initiatives in the Rakhine state.
India, Oman Joint Naval Exercise: Naseem-Al-Bahr 2017
The naval forces of India and Oman have participated in the 11th edition of Naseem-Al-Bahr (Sea Breeze) Exercise 2017 at Bin Sultan Naval Base in Oman.
