State innovator’s device to help handloom sector
  • For the first time, a buta (ornamental design) making mechanical device – ‘Multi Buta Weaving Sley’, known among Assam weavers as Chanekee – has been designed by an Assam youth for weaving various types of ornamental designs in handloom fabrics.
  • The device has been accepted as an innovation by the Union Government and its Patent Office has granted the patent right to Dipak Bharali, the architect of this device by issuing a patent certificate.
  • Over 4,000 pieces of the device have been sold to fabric producers from across the country and to the Union Ministry of Textiles. In Sualkuchi alone, 1,500 to 1,800 pieces of the device are in use right at this moment.
  • A piece of the device costs between Rs 7,000 and Rs 20,000, depending on the numbers of buta they are made to weave and also on their size.
  • The Union Ministry of Textiles has incorporated the device in its Cluster Development Programme and also in its handloom development schemes.

Central Govt bans Khalistan Liberation Force
  • The Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) has been banned under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), saying that the “Centre believes KLF is involved in terrorism as it has committed and participated in acts of terrorism in India”.
  • The Centre’s moves follows the National Investigation Agency (NIA) recommending the ban citing KLF’s involvement in “community-specific targeted killings in Punjab” and carrying out multiple terror attacks in the state between February 2016 and October 2017.
  • The KLF is the 40th organisation to be banned under the UAPA. Among the 39 groups banned earlier include four Sikh extremist groups including BabbarKhalsa International, Khalistan Commando Force, Khalistan Zindabad Force and International Sikh Youth Federation.
  • The KLF came into existence in 1986 with the objective of establishing an independent state of Khalistan by secession of Punjab through violent means.

China successfully tests S-400 missile system
  • China has successfully tested the sophisticated S-400 air defence system bought from Russia, The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tested the system last month, successfully shooting down a “simulated ballistic target”.
  • China had received the last shipments of the weaponry from Russia in July under a $3 billion contract signed in 2015, becoming the first country to import the advanced missile system from Moscow.
  • In October, India had signed a $5 billion deal with Russia to acquire the air defence system despite the looming threat of sanctions by the US.
  • The system is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles and it can be used against ground objectives. It is also able to intercept cruise missiles out to a range of about 40 km due to their low altitude flight paths.
