6 Ecological Parks to be developed in Manipur
  • Six ecological parks are being developed across six districts in Manipur.
  • Chief Minister N Biren Singh reviewed the activities of Forest and Environment department, Loktak Development Authority and Labour and Employment department.
  • A survey on the present status of ‘Umang Lais’ is almost completed, officials of State Environment department said. As per the survey, there are around 800 Umang Lais across the State and plans are on for widespread plantation and geo-tagging mapping activities.
  • The department has submitted a Rs 100 crore worth Detailed Project Report for rejuvenation of Nambul river to Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

WW-I Sumi Naga Labour Corps centenary celebration
  • World War-I Sumi Naga Labour Corps Association, under the aegis of Sumi Hoho, the apex body of Sumis, celebrated its centenary, marking a momentous occasion in Sumi Naga tribe history.
  • The centenary celebration was a momentous occasion in Sumi history, when 100 years ago, Kuhoi Zhimomi Sema Naga (Sukhai) assisted by Hekikhe Awomi (Surumi) led 2,000 Nagas, designated as 21st Naga Labour Corps, formed an expeditionary force to assist the Allies’ war effort in the European theatre during WW I.
  • Of the 2,000 Nagas, 1,000 were Sema Nagas while the rest 1,000 Nagas were from Lotha tribe (400), Ao (200), Rengma (200), Chang and other trans-frontier tribes (200).
  • The Sumi community celebrated the centenary to honour and pay homage to their forefathers who courageously embarked overseas to assist the Allied forces and in memories of those who never returned home.

Centre releases Rs. 1,146 crore to TN as cyclone relief
  • The Centre has approved an additional assistance of Rs. 1,146 crore to Tamil Nadu for providing relief to those affected by Cyclone Gaja.
  • The High Level Committee (HLC) chaired by the Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh approved the additional assistance from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) of Rs. 1,146.12 crore to Tamil Nadu.
  • Earlier the Central Government had released an assistance of Rs. 353.70 crore from SDRF as an interim relief, in order to support the affected people of the State.

FACTFILE – Cyclone Gaja

  • Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Gaja was the fifth named cyclone of the 2018 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, after cyclones Sagar, Mekunu, Luban and Titli.
  • Forming on November 5 as a low pressure system over the Gulf of Thailand, the system crossed through Southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsula and eventually crossed into the Andaman Sea.
  • The weak system intensified into a depression over the Bay of Bengal on November 10 and further intensified to a cyclonic storm on November 11, it is named ‘Gaja’ by Thailand, a sanskrit word means elephant.
  • After tracking west-southwestward for a number of days in the Bay of Bengal, Gaja made landfall in South India, shifted through Vedaranyam, Voimedu, Muthupet, and Adirampattinam.
  • Around 63 people were killed by the storm

Rosatom of Russia completes training courses for Indian engineers 
  • Russia’s state-run atomic energy corporation Rosatom has completed its advanced training course for Indian engineers in Ranchi planned for the current year in collaboration with India’s public sector undertaking Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), Rosatom.
  • 120 specialists have already completed six training courses out of nine planned under the programme being undertaken by CNIITMASH, a subsidiary of Atomenergomash, which is the machine building division of Rosatom.
  • The courses took place at the Center for General Engineering and Technical Education (TSOITO) in Ranchi, at the premises of HEC Ltd (one of the largest state-owned machine-building enterprises in India) with the aid of the State Department of heavy mechanical engineering.
  • These are being conducted under the cooperation agreement between HEC and CNIITMASH signed in December 2015.
