First State level Barak festival begins in Manipur
- The 1st State level Barak festival began at Senapathi of Manipur, under the theme ‘Sustaining peace and harmony’.
- The festival is being organised to protect and conserve Barak river which originates in the hills of Liyai village in Manipur’s Senapati district and flows down through Senapati and Tamenglong districts before crossing over into Assam’s Cachar district and then into Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh.
- The river provides livelihood to five tribes – Mao, Maram, Poumai, Thangal and Zeliangrong in Senapati district.
FACTFILE – Barak river
- The Barak River is one of the longest rivers of Asia at 2,410 km (1,330 mi) flowing through the states of Nagaland, Manipur and Assam in India and flowing in to Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh.
- It is being developed as one of the Inland waterways of India.
- Its drainage basin covers 880,000 sq km (340,000 mi). It is the fifth largest river in the world by discharge volume of water.
India’s tea exporters focus on Chinese market
- India’s tea export to neighbouring China is expected to touch 15 million kg by the end of next calendar year. During the January-October period, India exported 7.76 million kg of tea to China, valued at around Rs 135 crore compared to 6.5 million kg in the year-ago period.
- China imports close to 30 million kg of tea annually, a major share of which comes from Sri Lanka. This is because they keep organising frequent trade delegations.
- Indian experters could take advantage of changing consumption pattern in China, with a rising preference for CTC.
- India exported close to 240 million kgs of tea in 2017. Russia, UAE, UK and Iran are some of the major markets for imports of Indian teas.
- Orthodox and Darjeeling tea account for a major share of total exports to China while CTC is also gaining share in a big way.
- India produces mostly CTC, with orthodox accounting for close to 10 per cent of the country’s total production of around 1,278.83 million kg in 2017.
India’s first private UAV factory comes up in Hyderabad
- India’ first private sector unit for manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) opened at Adani Aerospace Park.
- Built by the Adani Group and Israel-based Elbit Systems, the 50,000 square feet facility will develop Hermes 900 medium altitude long-endurance UAVs for the Indian and global markets.
- The unit will begin with the manufacture of complete carbon composite aerostructures for Hermes 900, followed by Hermes 480, catering to global markets. It will further be ramped up for assembly and integration of complete UAVs.
- The plant has been built at Adani Aerospace Park, the first defence and aerospace complex of Adani Group, at Hardware Park on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
ADB to lend $60 million to check floods, riverbank erosion in Assam
- India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $60 million loan agreement to reduce floods and the riverbank erosion in Assam.
- The Tranche 2 loan is part of the $120 million multi-tranche financing facility for the Assam Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Investment Program approved by the ADB Board in October 2010.
- The loan aims to continue financing riverbank protection works, renovation of flood embankments and community-based flood risk management activities in critically flood-prone areas along the Brahmaputra River in Assam.
- The loan will have a 20-year term, including a grace period of five years, an annual interest rate determined in accordance with ADB’s lending facility based on the London Interbank Offered Rate, and a commitment charge of 0.15 per cent per year.
