Centre to use technology to seal borders with Bangladesh
- The Central government has decided to use new technology to seal India’s international borders with Bangladesh passing through Assam and West Bengal by putting in place a comprehensive integrated border management system.
- The Union Minister said that during his visit to Israel, he saw the Middle East nation taking the help of technology to secure its borders.
- So taken a decision that we will seal Bengal and Assam’s borders with Bangladesh.
Government eyeing Rs 90,000-cr divestment in FY20
- The government raised its disinvestment target for 2019-20 by 12.5 per cent to Rs 90,000 crore even as less than half of the budgeted target of Rs 80,000 in the outgoing fiscal has been realised in the first 10 months.
- The government has raised Rs 35,532 crore from the sale of its shares in the Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in 2018-19.
- The government received over Rs 1 lakh crore from disinvestment proceeds during 2017-18.
- The government mopped up Rs 17,000 crore through the CPSE Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) follow-on offer.
- The CPSE ETF was launched in March 2014 to help government manage its divestment in CPSEs. The government raised Rs 8,325 crore in the first further fund offer (FFO) of Bharat 22 ETF.
- As many as 57 CPSEs are now listed with total market capitalisation of over Rs 13 lakh crore.
- The government plans to use the divestment fund of Rs 90,000 crore to finance expenditure on infrastructure project, education, health sectors and investment in the railways towards capital expenditure in 2019-20, as per the Budget documents.
Two RRBs to be merged to form Tamil Nadu Grama Bank
- Two regional rural banks (RRBs), PallavanGrama Bank and PandyanGrama Bank will be merged to form Tamil Nadu Grama Bank as per the Finance Ministry notification.
- The new Tamil Nadu Grama Bank will be under the sponsorship of Indian Bank with head office in Salem.
- Originally the Pallavan Grama Bank was sponsored by Indian Bank and Pandyan Grama Bank by Indian Overseas Bank.

Assam Finance Department to use social media for state budget
- The Assam Finance Department has decided to use social media platforms to inform and engage citizens on the state’s 2019-20 Budget.
- Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that social media is an effective tool to engage the public and acquire feedback for the upcoming Budget which will be presented at the Assam Legislative Assembly
- The use of social media for seeking people’s participation and inputs in the Budget is also a first of its kind experiment in the country and has been very effective.
- The state government’s budget app called “Assam Budget”, available both on Android and iOS, is also a unique initiative towards a ‘Digital India’.
Odisha announces scholarships for KALIA beneficiaries’ children
- Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the ‘KALIA ChhatraBruti’, which will provide scholarships to the children of the KALIA scheme beneficiaries for pursuing higher education.
- The Chief Minister announced the scheme at a farmers’ congregation in Keonjhar district.
- Under the scholarship scheme, the government will bear the educational expenses of the children of the Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) beneficiaries, who are studying in government professional colleges on merit.
- An amount of Rs 10,000 per family at the rate of Rs 5,000 each for the Kharif and Rabi seasons will be provided as financial assistance for taking up cultivation under the scheme.
- Besides, landless households will be provided Rs. 12,500 to take up activities like goat rearing units, mini layer units, duckery units, fishery kits for fishermen and women, mushroom cultivation and beekeeping.
