Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme transferring the first instalment of 2,000 each to over one crore farmers.
  • Under the Scheme, 6,000 will be given per year to small and marginal farmers having combined land holding or ownership of up to two hectares.
  • The amount will be given in three instalments of 2,000 each and will be transferred directly to the bank account of beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer.
  • PM-KISAN, which is entirely funded by the central government, will incur an annual expenditure of 75,000 crore.
  • The existing land-ownership system in the states/UTs (Union territories) will be used for identification of beneficiaries. Those whose names appear in land records as on February 1, 2019 are eligible for benefit.
  • The first installment of money under the scheme has been deposited in accounts of 1.01 crore farmers.

Cyber safety protocol for students published by Kerala
  • The state-run Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) published a cyber safety protocol detailing guidelines.
  • The protocol comes as per the recommendations in a report of the Committee on the Welfare of Women, Transgenders, Children and Differently Abled under the state legislative Assembly.
  • It carries specific instructions for institution heads, teachers, parents and students to ensure cyber safety. The protocol also specifies 11 activities to be strictly followed by students.
  • The protocol also demands the parents to alert the concerned officers if they feel that their child has become a victim of cybercrime. 

Cybersafety is the safe and responsible use of information and communication technology. It is about keeping information safe and secure, but also about being responsible with that information, being respectful of other people online, and using good ‘netiquette’.


Odisha Govt. launches boat ambulance service
  • The Odisha government has launched a boat ambulance service to ferry patients to hospitals in remote areas at a cost of Rs 5.40 crore.
  • Two boat ambulances each have been sanctioned for Malkangiri and Kendrapara districts, and one each for Koraput and Kalahandi.
  • The service includes six boat ambulances and 60 jetties with walkway. The operational cost of the ambulances is estimated to be around Rs 90 lakh per annum.
  • The new facility will become a sort of a “vessel of hope” for people living in numerous far-flung, river-locked pockets of the state.

Naveen Patnaik is the Chief Minister and  Ganeshi Lal is the Governor of Odisha.


Irani, Rijiju lay foundation stones of silk printing and processing units in Udalguri district
  • Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju visited the Sericulture office of Udalguri district at Sapkhaiti and laid the foundation stone of silk printing and processing units, eri spinning mill.
  • Smriti Irani laid the foundation stone of the silk processing units while Kiren Rijiju, inaugurated the Common Facility Centre for Ambar Charkha Eri Silk knitted units.
  • Common Facility for farm activities and silk spinning unit and launched the integrated Eri Silk Spinning Development Project by utilising tapioca plantation under NERTPS.

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) – IIT Guwahati signs MOU
  • Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has signed an MoU with IIT Guwahati (IITG) for incubation of NRL-sponsored startups under its startup funding initiative ‘iDEATION’.
  • The MoU was signed at IITG between Director (Technical), NRL Bhaskar Phukan and Director, IITG Prof Gautam Biswas.
  • The MoU will facilitate providing incubation facility and mentoring to the startups selected through iDEATION by the established Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) of IITG.
  • This win-win collaboration will provide impetus, necessary infrastructure and guidance for taking forward NRL-sponsored startup projects in the region.

  • NRL is located at Morangi, Golaghat district, Assam in India is a refinery owned by Numaligarh Refinery Limited, a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum (61.65%), Oil India (26%) and Govt of Assam (12.35%).

  • IIT Guwahati is a public institution established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India.

PM unveils country’s first post-Independence war memorial ‘National War Memorial’
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the National War Memorial near India Gate that has been built to commemorate the valour and sacrifice of the armed forces personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation post Independence.
  • Since Independence, more than 25,000 personnel have been martyred during the Indo-China War in 1962, the Indo-Pakistan wars in 1947, 1965 and 1971, the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka and the conflict in Kargil in 1999.
  • The National War Memorial also commemorates the soldiers who participated and made supreme sacrifices in United Nations peace-keeping missions, Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, counter insurgency operations and Low Intensity Conflict Operations (LICO).

FACTFILENational War Memorial at Delhi

  • Built at a cost of Rs 171 crore, the memorial has a 15.5 metre tall obelisk with an eternal flame and 16 circular walls of honour on which names of 25,942 martyrs have been carved in golden on granite tablets.
  • The pattern of the walls symbolise the ancient Indian war formation “Chakravyuh”. The design of the memorial has a layout comprising four concentric circles, namely the “Amar Chakra” or Circle of Immortality, the “Veerta Chakra” or Circle of Bravery, the “Tyag Chakra” or Circle of Sacrifice and the “Rakshak Chakra” or Circle of Protection.
  • The memorial complex includes the central obelisk, an eternal flame and six bronze murals depicting the famous battles fought by the Indian Army, the Air Force and the Navy in a covered gallery.

Union Minister launches Rs 4,459 crore highway projects in Himachal Pradesh
  • Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari laid foundation stones for Rs 4,459.24 crore highway projects at Gaggal town. He also inaugurated four-laning of 37.05 km strech, from Punjab-Himachal border to Sihuni, of the National Highway 154 to be completed at a cost of Rs 1,572.90 crore.
  • 60 km Paonta Sahib-Gumma-Feduzpul section of the National Highway 707, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,356 crore.
  • 75 km Hamirpur-Mandi section of the National Highway 70 and the 15.75 km Una-Bhiroo section of the National Highways 503A.

  • The ministry of the Government of India, that is the apex body for formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws relating to road transport, transport research and in also to increase the mobility and efficiency of the road transport system in India.
  • Through its officers of Central Engineering Services (Roads) cadre it is responsible for the development of National Highways of the country. Road transport is a critical infrastructure for economic development, as it influences the pace, structure and pattern of development.
  • Roads are used to transport over 60 percent of the total goods and 85 percent of the passenger traffic.

AIIMS, UCL signs MOU for joint research
  • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and University College London (UCL) signed a memorandum of understanding to explore potential areas of collaboration.
  • Including research-oriented activities, staff and student exchange programmes, research fellowship programmes, workshops and other events related to medical science.
  • The research will focus on impact of environment, particularly pollution, on the health of pregnant women, lungs and maternal health.
  • As part of the ongoing research collaborations, the AIIMS has joined the International Centre for Genomic Medicine in Neuromuscular Diseases (ICGMN), which is led by the UCL
  • The ICGMN brings together skills and resources from five countries (India, the UK, Brazil, South Africa and Turkey) and aims to advance the genetic diagnosis and therapy for patients with muscle wasting neuromuscular diseases, including motor neurone disease and muscular dystrophy.

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous public medical colleges of higher education. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance.

University College London is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom. It is a constituent college of the federal University of London, and is the third largest university in the United Kingdom by total enrollment, and the largest by postgraduate enrollment.
