Cabinet approved a proposal for a 10% quota for economically backward sections of upper caste communities.
Now government can go-ahead to make the required amendments to Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution, to make the quota reservation effective.
The new quota would have to be implemented in a 50+10 percent formula. This is meant to apply to direct recruitment and for admission in higher educational institutions.
The reservation for the economically backward sections of the upper caste communities cutting across religious lines are the intended beneficiaries of the quota.
The ‘economically backward’ tag would be applicable to ‘upper caste’ families that have an annual income below Rs 8 lakh, own less than five hectares of agricultural land, own homes smaller than 1,000 sqft, own residential plots below 100 square yards in notified municipalities or 200 square in non-notified municipality areas.

French Navy chief Admiral Christophe Prazuck arrived on an official visit which aims to consolidate naval relations between India and France, as also to explore new avenues for cooperation.
During his visit, Admiral Prazuck will hold bilateral discussions with Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and other senior officials of the Indian Navy.
A range of issues of mutual interest to both navies, encompassing maritime operations, training, logistics and maintenance would be discussed during these meetings.
The Indian Navy cooperates with its French counterpart on many fronts, which include bilateral naval exercise ‘Varuna’, interaction on aircraft carrier operations and in generating maritime domain awareness through the medium of security dialogue and staff talks.
