Mauritius PM to be Chief Guest of 15th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2019
  • Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth will be the chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), the January 21-23 Indian diaspora conclave to be held in Varanasi.
  • India-origin MPs — Himanshu Gulati of Norway and Kanwaljit Bakshi of New Zealand — will be the guests of honour of the ceremony.
  • The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award will be conferred on 30 individuals for their achievements and accomplishments in different fields at the valedictory ceremony on January 23 that will be addressed by President Ram Nath Kovind.

FACTFILE – Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • It is a celebratory day observed to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India.
  • The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.
  • Established in 2000, it is sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
  • In 2006, The concept of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) was launched during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention at Hyderabad on 9 January.

  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated a Defence Industrial Corridor at Tamil Nadu that is expected to attract Rs 3,123.50 crore worth of investment
  • Sitharaman said the Centre had decided to have two corridors – in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – despite the demands from states like Karnataka and Maharashtra.
  • The development of these specialised corridors will facilitate a well planned and efficient industrial base.Several public and private sector organisations announced investment projects worth about Rs 3,100 crore
  • Major players like Lockheed Martin, LMW and others announced their plans to set up units in the corridor.
  • The Ordinance Factory Board (OFB) announced its plans to invest about Rs 2,305 crore in Tamil Nadu.
  • The companies that have announced their investments are: BEL (Rs 140.50 crore), BEML (Rs 40 crore), BDL (Rs 150 crore), MDL (Rs 15 crore), TVS (Rs 30 crore), Data Patterns (Rs 75 crore), Alpha Designs (Rs 100 crore), AIDAT (Rs 163 crore) and Aerospace Engineers (Rs 105 crore) .
