Assam Police bags award for excellence in training and crytography
- The Assam Police’s Communication & Technical Wing, Assam Police Radio Organization(APRO) bagged two prestigious awards at the National Conference of Heads of Police Communications in New Delhi.
- The awards were given to APRO for providing excellent training to police personnel and also for excelling in cryptography.
- The technical wing is led by Additional Director General of Police(ADGP) SN Singh. The primary role of APRO is to support the law and order enforcing agencies by providing reliable, secure and high speed communication towards effective maintenance of law and order, prevention and detection of crimes and criminals.
Nagaland to launch Tourist Police squad
- Nagaland police are all set to launch its special Tourist Police squad before the start of Hornbill Festival at Kisama near Kohima to provide safe and friendly environment to the visiting tourists.
- The State police, in collaboration with the tourism department, organised an orientation programme for the special police squad at police headquarters in Kohima.
- The special squad comprising 73 police personnel; 50 women from 15 Nagaland Armed Police (India Reserve Battalion) and 23 male personnel, will be given specialised training for five days.
- A first immediate response app will be introduced and linked with the control room to ensure the safety of everyone.
- Though Nagaland has not encountered any incident of crime with any tourist till date, the Tourist Police will be introduced this time as a precautionary measure.
FACTFILE – Hornbill Festival
- The Hornbill Festival, also called the ‘Festival of Festivals’, is a celebration held every year from 1 – 10 December, in Nagaland.
- To encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December. The first festival was held in 2000.
- The festival is named after the Indian hornbill, the large and colourful forest bird which is displayed in the folklore of most of the state’s tribes.
- Organized by the State Tourism and Art & Culture Departments, the Hornbill Festival showcases a mélange of cultural displays under one roof.
- The Hornbill Festival is held at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama.
- The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions.
- One of the major highlights of this festival is the Hornbill International Rock Festival, which is held at Indira Gandhi Stadium; local and international rock bands perform.
Economic potential
- The Hornbill Festival has contributed significantly to enhancing the state’s tourism brand. The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland allows tourists to have an insight into the different tribes of Nagaland.
Russia and India signed contracts to build 4 frigates for Indian Navy
- Russia and India have signed contracts to build four frigates for the Indian Navy,Russia’s state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport and India’s Goa Shipyard Limited had signed a contract worth $500 million to build two Admiral Grigorovich-class
- Another contract worth nearly $1 billion was signed to import two other such warships from Russia. Those ships are being built at the Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s Kaliningrad and are expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy by 2022-2023.
- Russia built three Project 11356 frigates for the Indian Navy in 2012-2013.
- The frigates are multi-purpose patrol ships capable of engaging both enemy ships and aerial targets.
India, Singapore resolves to deepen cooperation and renew military training pact
- India and Singapore agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in defence and regional maritime security and renewed the pact to conduct joint military training and exercises in India at the 3rd Defence Ministers Dialogue (DMD).
- Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her Singapore counterpart Ng Eng Hen agreed to step up intelligence and information sharing, particularly in the areas of maritime security and counter terrorism and expand collaboration on submarine safety and rescue.
- Both Ministers agreed on the importance of international cooperation in tackling transnational security threats and in particular measures to collectively tackle the threat of terrorism.
- Singapore Defence Minister attended the final sea phase of the 25th edition of the Singapore-India joint military drill, SIMBEX . The multi-dimensional exercise witnessed participation of ships, submarines a well as aircraft from both sides and live firings at sea.
- The DMD commenced after both countries signed the revised Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) in 2015
