Mary Kom creates history, wins gold sixth time in World Boxing Championship
  • The Indian pugilist from Manipur, MC Mary Kom, has become world boxing champion for the sixth time and made history in the event.
  • MC Mary Kom won the sixth gold by defeating Ukraine’s H. Okhota in an unanimous 5:0 decision in light fly 48 kg category at the 2018 AIBA World Championship being held at New Delhi.
  • Mary Kom surpassed legendary Irish boxer Katie Tayor, who had five golds to her name at the World Championships, after winning the 6th gold at the World Championships.
  • This win has helped her level with men’s six-time world champion Felix Savon in World Championships history.

BIOGRAPHY – Mary Kom

  • Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte is an Indian Olympic boxer from Manipur.
  • She is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships.
  • She is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and winning the bronze medal.
  • She has also been ranked as No. 1 AIBA World Women’s Ranking Light Flyweight category.
  • She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea and is the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
  • On 26 April 2016, Kom was nominated by the President of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.
  • In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, appointed Mary Kom along with Akhil Kumar as national observers for boxing.

DST to setup  Technology Enabling Centre (TEC) at Tezpur University to promote R&D in Northeast
  • In a major boost for the entire north-eastern region as a whole in terms of Research & Development output (R&D), Intellectual Property (IP), Research Translation and Technology Commercialization, as the country’s premier academic and research institution, Tezpur University (TU) has been handpicked by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) New Delhi, as one of the nodal centres in the North-Eastern region for establishing the Technology Enabling Centre (TEC).
  • A fund allocation of Rs five crore will be provided to each nodal centre to create an ecosystem for technology development and to provide a platform to network researchers with other institutes, national laboratories and industry for developing a self-sustainable TEC, through the next five years.
  • The TU TEC team will undergo an orientation programme at IIT Delhi for establishment of this project at TU.

FACTFILE – Tezpur University

  • Tezpur University is a Central University located in Tezpur in the North Eastern state of Assam, India by an act in Parliament of India in 1994.
  • The establishment of Tezpur University is considered to be one of the outcomes of the Assam Accord, along with the establishment of Assam University and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
  • Tezpur University was established, by an Act of Parliament, in 1994. The then prime minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao, chaired the opening of the university.
  • Tezpur University was ranked 601-800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018 and 100 in Asia.
  • The QS World University Rankings ranked it 247 in Asia in 2018.
  • In India it was ranked 46 overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework of 2018 and 29 among universities.

India’s Forex reserves up $568.9 million to $393.58 billion
  • India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves rose by $568.9 million during the week ended November 16. the overall forex reserves increased to $393.58 billion from $393.01 billion reported for the week ended November 9.
  • FCAs, the largest component of the forex reserves, edged-higher by $506 million to $368.54 billion during the week ended November 16.
  • The value of the country’s gold reserves increased by 73 million to $20.96 billion.
  • The SDR value was lower by $5.7 million to $1.45 billion, while the country’s reserve position with the IMF decreased by $4.4 million to $2.62 billion.

FACTFILE – Foreign exchange reserves of India

  • The Foreign exchange reserves of India are India’s holdings of cash, bank deposits, bonds, and other financial assets denominated in currencies other than India’s national currency, the Indian rupee. The reserves are managed by the Reserve Bank of India for the Indian government and the main component is foreign currency assets.
  • Foreign exchange reserves act as the first line of defense for India in case of economic slowdown, but acquisition of reserves has its own costs.
  • Foreign exchange reserves facilitate external trade and payment and promote orderly development and maintenance of foreign exchange market in India.
  • India’s total foreign exchange (Forex) reserves consist of foreign exchange assets (FCA), gold reserves of around $21 billion, SDRs (Special Drawing Rights with the IMF) of US$1.47 billion and US$2.47 billion reserve position in IMF.
  • The FCA component also include investments in US Treasury bonds, bonds of other selected governments and deposits with foreign central and commercial banks.
  • India is at 9th position in List of countries by foreign-exchange reserves.

Dipa Karmakar won bronze at Artistic Gymnastics World CUP
  • Tripura’s Ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar won a bronze medal in the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, which is being held in Germany.
  • Dipa scored 14.316 points to claim the bronze medal in the World Cup event. The Artistic Gymnastics World Cup is also part of the eight-event qualifying system for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • With this bronze, she inches closer to qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

FACTFILE – Dipa Karmakar

  • Karmakar first gained attention when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the Games.
  • She also won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, both firsts for her country.
  • Karmakar participated at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics, and the first Indian gymnast to do so in 52 years. She attained fourth position in Women’s Vault Gymnastics event at Rio, with an overall score of 15.066.
  • Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal at a global event, when she finished first in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey in July 2018.
  • Karmakar is one of the only five women who have successfully landed the Produnova, which is regarded as the most difficult vault currently performed in women’s gymnastics.
  • She received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India.
  • For her performance in Rio Olympics 2016, the Government of India conferred upon her the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in August 2016.

Tripura Govt set to introduce CBSE syllabus in State education
  • Tripura is all set to introduce the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus in all the state government-run schools and government-aided schools from classes I to XII, from the next academic session.
  • Tripura Education Minister Ratan Lal informed that the state government will be introducing the CBSE syllabus to make the State’s education system at par with the national standard. A detailed plan is undergoing to train the teachers of government schools so they do not face difficulties in teaching the subjects of the CBSE syllabus.

Cabinet approves Bill to regulate allied and healthcare professions
  • The Union Cabinet approved the Allied and Healthcare Professions Bill, 2018 that aims to regulate and standardize the education and services by allied and healthcare professionals.
  • The Bill provides for setting up of an Allied and Healthcare Council of India and corresponding State Allied and Healthcare Councils which will play the role of a standard-setter and facilitator for professions of Allied and Healthcare such as physiotherapists, nutritionists and workers in laboratories etc.
  • It is estimated that the Allied and Healthcare Professions Bill, 2018 will directly benefit around 8-9 Lakh existing Allied and Healthcare related professionals in the country and several other graduating professionals joining workforce annually and contributing to the health system.
  • The Bill provides for structure, constitution, composition and functions of the Central Council and State Councils.
  • The councils will be framing policies and standards, Regulation of professional conduct, Creation and maintenance of live Registers, provisions for common entry and exit examinations, etc.
