Arunachal bags 3 awards in North East Technology Shabha Awards
  • The Arunachal Pradesh Capital Complex district administration bagged the North East Technology Shabha Award in the “enterprise mobility category” for GPS based sanitation management at the Itanagar Municipal Council (IMC).
  • This is the second award that the district administration and IMC has received for the GPS based sanitation management. Earlier, the project had received the Skoch Order of Merit Award at the 52nd Skoch Summit.
  • Besides bagging the award in the enterprise mobility category, AP’s police and Accounts and Treasuries department also won awards for its Arunachal Suraksha (Mobile App) while the accounts and treasuries department was awarded for its Project eGPF (e-General Provident Fund application).
  • The eGPF system provides online all the GPF Account related information at any moment for employees of GoAP while the Arunachal Suraksha is a citizen centric service from Arunachal Pradesh Police where any citizen or tourist can get instant help from nearest police station on a single touch in situation of any distress.

FACTFILE – North East Technology Shabha

  • Organised by The Indian Express Group, the North East edition of Technology Sabha is a two-day residential conference that explores new trends and innovations in creating a digital ecosystem for accelerating e-Governance initiatives.
  • The conference featured thought leaders from various government organizations who have undertaken some of the best Government to Government, Government to Citizen and Government to Business initiatives.
  • It was conducted in Guwhati on 23-24 November, 2018

India provides Myanmar aid under friendship project
  • India has extended a $5 million aid to Myanmar in the second round of funding under the Myanmar-India Friendship Project, The cash assistance was handed over by Indian Ambassador VikramMisri to Myanmar Minister of Border Affairs Lt-Gen Ye Aung on 26th
  • Myanmar and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding for border development in May 2012 as part of the project, under which India is to provide a total of $25 million to Myanmar, divided into five rounds with $5 million each.
  • With the first round of aid, Myanmar completed eight road and bridge projects, 21 school projects and 17 health projects in Chin state and the Naga Self-Administered Zone in 2015.
  • By the second round of cash assistance extended, Myanmar will complete 20 road and bridge projects and 11 school projects

Kerala’s first lead-poisoning detection and treatment centre opens
  • Kerala saw the opening of its first lead-poisoning detection and treatment centre here, as people increasingly take to traditional medicines that are believed to contain heavy metals.
  • Lead is also present in cosmetics and paint and exposure to these can create health issues.
  • Set up at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), the new Lead Research Lab is the 51st centre of the National Referral Centre for Lead Projects in India (NRCLPI).
  • It was inaugurated by Venkatesh Thuppil, popularly known as the Lead Man of India.

Meghalaya State Assembly passes resolution on Khasi and Garo languages
  • The Meghalaya Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to urge the Centre to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
  • The resolution was tabled by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in the House during the one-day special session.
  • The Chief Minister said that though the resolution in this regard was passed on September 27 during the Autumn Session of the Assembly, but the State Government found that the contents of the resolution should be further strengthen, and in consultation with the Khasi Authors’ Society, and A’chik Literature Society, it was felt necessary to pass a fresh resolution to replace the earlier resolution.
  • Stating that Khasi and Garo have fulfilled criteria for getting included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and thus both the languages should be included together.
  • In 2005, the Meghalaya Assembly had also passed the Meghalaya Language Act which recognized Khasi and Garo as the state’s associate official languages. But English continues to be an official language as no other language links the Khasi, Jaiñtia and the Garo communities.
  • The demand was raised nearly 58 years ago when promulgation of the Assam Official Language Act, 1960, which threatened to overshadow the Khasi and Garo languages.
  • The movement started against the imposition of Assamese as the official language during the then state of Assam, including the erstwhile United Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills district.

FACTFILE – Khasi Language

  • 14,31,344 people in India speaks Khasi, as per the Khasi Authors’ Society.
  • Khasi, as a written language, has completed 176 years. It got due recognition from the Calcutta University up to the entrance level since 1900 and at the degree level since 1919 in that university. The language is being taught from the primary school level up to the PhD level.
  • The resolution said that the Khasi language has had its written script since 1842 by adopting the Roman alphabets as introduced by Thomas Jones with the help of Donrai and Junkha, the Khasi literates of that time.

FACTFILE – Garo Language

  • According to the 2011 census, Garo at present has a language population of 936,496.
  • The compilation of words of Garo language was first done by John Elliott, the Commissioner of Dacca in 1788-1789 which marked the beginning of the efforts to put the language into writing, and the Roman script has been adopted to write the Garo language with some modifications to represent the sounds of the language.
  • All writings have been done in this script since the beginning of writing of the language in 1860s.
  • At the post graduate level, Garo language was introduced as a subject in 1996, and now M.Phil and Ph.D scholars are permitted to write their thesis in Garo language.

International Dance Festival organized at Jorhat
  • The 10th edition of Pragjyoti International Dance festival to be held at Jorhat stadium complex, Jorhat.
  • The fest being held for the first time here has been organised by the district administration in collaboration with the Pratahbhraman Parisalona Samiti and will be open for all.
  • There would be five dance programmes including two from abroad. The Russian dancer will perform for 30 minutes while the Italian dancer will dance for 20 minutes.
  • There will also be a troupe from Manipur and also a dancer from Bangalore. From Assam, the Jorhat Satra Mahavidyalay will perform the Sattriya dance, the State’s classical dance and Jorhat Dance Academy will perform a medley of the folk dances of Assam.

India and ADB ink $200 million loan pact to improve Bihar’s state highways
  • The Indian government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $200-million loan agreement for improving Bihar’s state highways. ADB would provide the loan to finance the widening and upgrading of about 230 km of state highways in Bihar to all-weather standards with road safety features.
  • This loan will aid the efforts of the Bihar government to upgrade all state highways to meet the minimum two-lane standard with better surfaces and improved road safety, leading to improved connectivity.
  • Since 2008, ADB has provided four loans to Bihar, amounting to $1.43 billion, to upgrade about 1,453 km of State Highways and to construct a new bridge over the Ganga river near Patna.

IIT Kharagpur and University of Auckland ink pact for research tie-up
  • IIT Kharagpur and the University of Auckland signed a pact to foster academic exchange and research collaboration, faculty exchange and visiting/adjunct appointments, student mobility.
  • The two educational establishments would explore opportunities for research in healthcare technologies, new materials, cyber security and artificial Intelligence.
  • The MoU also involves the scope of outreach centers at IIT Kharagpur and Auckland representing various prestigious higher educational institutions of both countries.
  • The two institutes will further explore possibilities of a Dual Masters and Doctoral programmes and a collaborative B.Tech. – M.Tech. Programme.

Indian forces have successfully conducted a large-scale tri-service exercise
  • The India forces have successfully conducted a large-scale tri-service exercise involving assets of the Indian Navy, Army and the Air Force which aims to sharpen joint war fighting capabilities and enhance operational synergy.
  • The exercise was conducted at sea off Goa and Karwar from November 17-23.
  • This exercise was coordinated by the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command in consultation with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) headquarters.
  • The exercise saw participation of Amphibious troops and Special Forces of the Indian Army, and C-17, C-130J, IL-76 and AN 32 aircraft and Garud choppers of the IAF.
  • The major activities conducted during this exercise included amphibious landing operations, air-landed operations, heli-borne insertion of Special Forces from sea, combat free fall by the tri-services Special Forces teams culminating in tactical follow-on operations on land.
