ICAR Tripura centre developed three new varieties of pulses
- The scientists from Tripura centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have invented three local varieties of pulses- Tripura Moong, Tripura Maskalai and TRCP-9(motordal).
- The Central government had already issued the notification on the innovation, which will soon be distributed among farmers for commercial cultivation. The cultivation of these pulses would boost the development of agricultural sector in Tripura.
- The production is expected to be around 10 percent higher and the quality of these pulses would be better. The pulses are less prone to diseases compared to other varieties of pulses and harvesting time would be little shorter.

- It was established by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi in 1975 at Lembucherra, 12km away from the capital town, Agartala.
Nagaland’s Wokha district is declared as organic tea zone
- Wokha district of Nagaland has been declared as organic tea zone. District Agriculture Officer Wokha Santsu Kithan appreciated the efforts of the Wokha District Small Growers Tea Association (WDSTGA) and encouraged them to resist use of chemicals, pesticides and insecticides for tea cultivation.
- WDSTGA had earlier made it mandatory for tea growers of Wokha district to stop using any kind of chemicals for cultivating tea.
- It also prohibited application of manure and salt in the farm and application of insecticides and pesticides on tea leaves.
- The association also barred the tea growers from using plastic in their farms.
- WDSTGA has also cautioned that any tea grower found going against their precautionary measures might have his/her registration cancelled and also might be prevented from doing any business in the tea sector.
ADB to lend $75 million for 24-hour water supply in Karnataka
- India signed a $75-million loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide round-the-clock water supply to Karnataka’s four coastal towns of Kundapura, Mangalore Puttur and Udupi, and to improve sanitation infrastructure in Mangalore town.
- The project finances would be used to augment water treatment production capacity by about 16 millions liters per day, lay about 90 kilometers of new water transmission lines and feeder mains, construct 29 overhead tanks and four ground-level service reservoirs.
- The project would also include establishing town-level supervisory control and data acquisition system to strengthen centralised supervision and control of water flow and water pressure.
- The tranche-two loan is part of the Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management Investment Programme, approved by the ADB Board in 2014, which aims to improve urban water resource management in selected river basins in Karnataka, modernisation and expansion of urban water supply and sanitation infrastructure, and improving water use efficiency.
