Hima Das to be appointed UNICEF India’s Youth Ambassador
- Assam’s sprint queen Hima Das, who won one gold and two silver medals at the Asian Games in Jakarta, is to be appointed UNICEF India’s Youth Ambassador.
- As a Youth Ambassador, Hima would work towards raising awareness about the rights and needs of children, and help amplify the voices of children and young people as active participants in decision making, thus contributing to their holistic development.
- UNICEF India works with Central government to ensure that each child born in this country gets the best start in life, thrives and develops to become a successful person.
BIOGRAPHY – Hima Das
- Nicknamed the “Dhing Express”, is an Indian sprint runner from Assam.
- She holds the current Indian national record in 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
- She is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships.
- Hima also won a silver medal in the 4×400 m mixed relay, which was held for the first time at Asian Games.
- Das is the second Assamese runner after Bhogeswar Baruah to win a gold medal at an international event. Baruah won a gold medal at the 1966 Asian Games in the men’s 800 meter event.
- Assam Govt appointed her as the state’s brand ambassador for sports.
- She was conferred with Arjuna Award by the President of India on 25 September 2018.
Indo-Russian military exercises Indra 2018 from November 18
- India and Russia will hold joint military exercises in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh from November 18. Exercise Indra 2018 will begin at the Babina Field Firing Ranges.
- This forms part of a drill to combat insurgency under the UN aegis. Company sized contingents of the 5th Army of Russia and a mechanised infantry battalion of India will participate in the 11-day training exercise.
- The aim of the exercise is to practice joint planning and conduct enhance interoperability of the two Armies in peace keeping and enforcement environment under UN aegis.
India’s Wholesale inflation in October rises to 5.28%
- Wholesale inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) stood at 5.28 per cent (provisional) in October.
- In September it stood at 5.13 per cent and 3.68 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.
- Food articles witnessed softening of prices with deflation at 1.49 per cent in October, against 0.21 per cent September.
- Vegetables too became cheaper with deflation at 18.65 per cent in October, compared to 3.83 per cent in the previous month.
- Inflation based on wholesale prices rose to a two-month high of 5.13 per cent in September, mainly due to hardening of food prices and rise in cost of petrol and diesel.
- The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation stood at 4.53 per cent in August and 3.14 per cent in September last year.
