Chittagong, Mongla ports opened for North Eastern India
  • The Governments of India and Bangladesh signed three major agreements that promises to end landlocked Tripura’s geographical isolation and facilitate its emergence as gateway to Southeast Asia.
  • These three agreements will allow India access to crucial Chittagong and Mongla ports and transit-transportation of goods to and from mainstream India to North East via Tripura. All the agreements were already approved by the Bangladesh Cabinet.
  • An interlinking of Gomati and Howrah rivers for water transport between the two countries and as preparatory measures both the rivers will be dredged by Government of India.
  • The goods and commodities from mainstream India will now reach Tripura through Chittagong and Mongla ports and reach other States of North East, while goods and commodities from this region including Tripura will be similarly sent to rest of India through these Bangladeshi ports.
  • Besides, the interlinking of Gomati and Howrah rivers and making them navigable through dredging will also greatly boost the economies of NE and Bangladesh.
  • Tripura State’s Water Resource department has already begun work on the interlinking plan of the two rivers to make the patch navigable under the supervision of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

Defence Acquisition Council approves upgrade of 17 Dorniers
  • In an effort to boost the maritime reconnaissance capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard, the Defence Acquisition Council(DAC)chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 27th Oct here approved mid life upgrade of 17 Dornier aircraft of the force at an approximate cost of Rs. 950 crore.
  • The upgrades will be carried out by public sector aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). 
  • The DAC also approved equipping of three aircraft with Pollution Surveillance Systems.
  • The Coast Guard is responsible for protecting the national interests in maritime zones of India which entails surveillance of sea areas of approximately 2.01 million square kilometres of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • The force is also the nodal agency in India for maritime pollution response.
  • It has a fleet of Dornier aircraft which play a pivotal role in maritime surveillance. In order to enhance the capabilities of the fleet, DAC accorded approval for upgradation of these aircraft with state-of-the-art technology, spares, special maintenance tools (SMT) and special test equipment (STE).

Central Command celebrates Infantry Day
  • The Indian Army’s Central Command celebrated Infantry Day at Lucknow on 27th The day is observed in commemoration of the first victorious military action led by the Infantry in Jammu and Kashmir after Independence to drive out Pakistani invaders.
  • In October 1947, tribals and troops of the newly-formed Pakistani Army attacked the state of Jammu and Kashmir and had threatened Srinagar.
  • On October 27, 1947, the valiant troops of the First Battalion, the Sikh Regiment, landed at the Srinagar airfield, initiating the liberation of the Valley.
  • The day began with wreath laying ceremony at ‘Smritika’ war memorial by Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna, Army Commander, Central Command and other army officers.
  • Krishna that the infantry has played a decisive role in our victories over Pakistan in 1965 and 1971.
  • The infantry also undertakes numerous civic action projects for our citizens in remote and inaccessible parts of India.

Telcos told to be ready with new KYC process by Nov 5
  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked telecom operators to be ready with an alternate verification process for approval from the department by November 5, as it ordered the operators to stop using Aadhaar e-KYC for the verification process.
  • The DoT in a notification ordered immediate discontinuation of the Aadhaar-based verification process for telecom subscribers in accordance with the Supreme Court’s verdict on September 26 which barred private entities from possessing Aadhaar details of their customers.
  • The telecom industry, through its joint representation on October 5, had suggested an alternate digital KYC (Know Your Customer) process for mobile subscribers.
  • The system proposed by the operators envisaged that the Customer Acquisition Form would be embedded with live photograph of subscriber and scanned images of proof of identity (POI) and proof of address (POA), thereby digitizing the end-to-end process of providing new subscriptions.

Agriculture Minister inaugurates erosion protection work
  • State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora formally inaugurated the anti-erosion protection work at Behora on 26th October to control the erosion by Dhansiri river, at an estimated cost of Rs 2.75 crore. The project will cover a length of 600 metres.
  • The rampant erosion by the Dhansiri river has posed a great threat, particularly to a big part of Mohura mouza, on the vast northern area of Bokakhat subdivision from Dhodang, Borpak to Chinakan.
  • About 5 km of the river bank, covering paddy fields and even touching residential villages, has already been eroded by the river.
  • The Water Resources Department had not taken any fruitful measures during the last several years.
  • But it is worth mentioning that out of the 5 km length, the erosion-effected portion of the department, work will be carried out for 600 metres only and this will not protect the entire portion, except the Behora Tea Estate No.12 Line.
  • The concerned people of the affected area are feeling insecure.
