A team of scientists has discovered a new species of bamboo-dwelling bat from a bamboo forest in Meghalaya. It was named as ‘Glischropus meghalayanus’ after the state of Meghalaya, which is celebrating its 50 years of statehood. With this discovery, the total number of bat species from India stands at 131 species with Meghalaya registering the highest bat diversity with 67 species.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recently notified the cost inflation index (CII) for FY 2022-23 as 331. For the previous year (FY 2021-22) CII was notified as 317. The fourth edition of Khelo India Youth Games 2021 concluded in  Panchkula and the host state Haryana grabbed  the top position in the medal tally with 52 gold, 39 silver and 46 bronze medals.

Maharashtra and Karnataka were at the second and third places respectively. The fourth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games saw participation of athletes from over 36 states and Union Territories competing in 25 different sports.

Agnipath Scheme is a new scheme introduced by the Government of India on 14 June 2022, for recruitment of soldiers below the rank of commissioned officers into the three services of the armed forces. Personnel recruited under this system are to be called Agniveers, which will be a new military rank. The scheme is scheduled to be implemented from September 2022.

Of the 50,000 recruited annually, 25 per cent will be allowed to continue for 15 years under permanent commission, to reduce the defence pension bill. 30 percent of monthly salary of Agniveers will be set aside, along with equal government contribution under Seva Nidhi programme.

Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were elected by the 75th session of the General Assembly on Friday to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2022-2023 term. According to the final tally, Ghana received 185 votes, Gabon 183, UAE 179, Albania 175 and Brazil 181 votes.

Krishna Srinivasan International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on June 8 announced the appointment of Indian national Krishna Srinivasan as director of the Asia and Pacific Department (APD) from June 22, 2022.
