New Benami Transactions Informants Reward Scheme, 2018 launched by the Income Tax Department
With the objective of obtaining people’s participation in the Income Tax Department’s efforts to unearth black money and to reduce tax evasion, IT Department has launched a new reward scheme titled “Benami Transactions Informants Reward Scheme, 2018”.
The reward scheme aims at encouraging people to provide information about benami transactions and properties as well as income earned on such properties.
Under the Benami Transactions Informants Reward Scheme, 2018, a person can get reward of up to Rs. 1 crore for giving specific information in prescribed manner to the Benami Prohibition Units (BPUs) in Investigation Directorates of Income Tax Department about benami transactions and properties as well as proceeds from such properties which are actionable under Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988.
India’s first Advanced DNA Forensic Lab to be set up in Chandigarh
Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi laid the foundation stone of an advanced DNA forensic laboratory in Chandigarh as part efforts to reduce the backlog of cases needing advanced forensic analysis.
Built at a cost of Rs 99.76 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund, the state-of-the-art ‘Sakhi Suraksha’ lab, will come up at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory campus to assist in investigation and prosecution of crimes including those committed against women and children.
The advance laboratory will help to meet the demand for more admissible, accurate and powerful forensic proof in the cases of crime against women and children.

- At present there are 6 Central Forensic Science Labs (CFSLs) in Chandigarh, Guwahati, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Bhopal and one State Forensic Science Lab in each State/UT.
- These labs are responsible for conducting forensic analysis of all cases in the country including sexual assault, criminal paternity and homicide.
- 5 more advanced forensic labs would come up in Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati, Pune and Bhopal.
India’s 1st National Sports University to come up in Manipur
India’s President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the ordinance approved by the Central Govt., to set up the country’s first national sports university in Imphal, the capital of Manipur.
National Sports University Ordinance, 2018 will be on the lines of the National Sports University Bill, 2017, introduced in Lok Sabha last year.

- It will be a first of its kind specialised University, to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching besides functioning as the national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting the best international practices.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid foundation stone for National Sports University on 16th March, 2018.
- It will have its second campus at Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow.
- India already has some state universities focusing on sports education named Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, Swarnim Gujarat Sports University etc and a Deemed University named Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education.
Tata Motors signs MoU with Maharashtra to promote e-mobility
Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile company by revenues on signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra for deployment of 1000 electric vehicles (EV) across its range of passenger and commercial vehicles in the State.
The company also partnered Tata group company, Tata Power, to set up of EV Charging Stations in the State. The MoU boosts the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2018 in accelerating the adoption of EVs in Maharashtra.

- Central Govt launched the National E-MobilityProgramme in India.
- Government of India has a vision of 100% e-mobility by 2030
- Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) concluded the first tender for procuring 10,000 e-vehicles last year.
- Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) will issue a fresh tender for additional 10,000 e-vehicles.
- With these 20,000 electric cars, India is expected to save over 5 crore litres of fuel every year leading to a reduction of over 5.6 lakh tonnes of annual CO2 emission.
- EESL envisions a growing demand from various government departments.
- India currently has just 350 EV charging stations serving about half-a-million vehicles. This restricts the distance one can travel in an EV, limiting its use.
- It takes at least an hour for an EV to get recharged, making it essential for users to factor this in while planning their commutes.

PM Narendra Modi’s 3-nation tour
Prime Minister Modi visited the three Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to boost the Act East policy. He met Indonesian President Joko Widodo and a range of bilateral issues were discussed, including shared economic ties, academic and science cooperation, fostering tourism and culture, and maritime relations. 15 Memoranda of Understanding were singed between the nations.
He visited Malaysia to call on his newly-elected Malaysian counterpart Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya. Prime Minister went to Singapore and met Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong. The two countries inked a total of 14 MoUs.

Union Ministry of Culture Launches ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’
The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has introduced a new scheme namely ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’ to reimburse the Central Government share of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) on purchase of raw items such as ghee, edible oil, atta/maida/rava/flour, rice, pulses, sugar, burra/jiggery etc which go into preparation of food/Prasad/langar/bhandara offered free of cost by religious institutions.
The scheme is provided with a total outlay of Rs. 325.00 Crores for Financial Years 2018-19 and 2019-20.
The objective of the scheme is to lessen the financial burden of such Charitable Religious Institutions who provide Food/Prasad/Langar (Community Kitchen)/Bhandara free of cost without any discrimination to Public/Devotees.
India Ranks 113th on World Childhood Index
India ranks 113rd in the list of 175 countries indexed by a global child rights group ‘Save the Children’. India’s rank was 116th in 2017 and thus improves slightly in this year’s ranking.
The report, titled “End of Childhood”, commends India’s achievements in reducing the rate of child marriages which it said was a major factor contributing to an improved score in the index.
China successfully launches new earth observation satellite ‘Gaofen-6‘
China successfully launched a new Earth observation satellite ‘Gaofen-6 ‘, which will be mainly used in agricultural resources research and disaster monitoring.
It was on a Long March-2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China. It was the 276th mission of China’s Long March rocket series.

- A Long March rocket or Changzheng rocket in Chinese pinyin is any rocket in a family of expendable launch systems operated by the People’s Republic of China.
- Development and design falls under the auspices of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.
- In English, the rockets are abbreviated as LM- for export and CZ- within China, as “Chang Zheng” means “Long March” in Chinese pinyin. The rockets are named after the Long March of Chinese history.
- The Long March 1 rocket was used to launch China’s first satellite, Dong Fang Hong 1, into Low Earth orbit on April 24, 1970, becoming the fifth nation to achieve independent launch capability.
- The Long March 1 was quickly replaced by the Long March 2 family of launchers.
