International Day of Yoga celebrated on 21st June
Worldwide, the International Day of Yoga celebrated on 21st June, 2018. Yoga, an ancient form of holistic healing, is regarded as one of the most effective methods of establishing a connection between the body minds by Indian sages. This type of exercise is performed through diet, breathing and physical posture for the relaxation of body and mind.
FACTFILE – International Day of Yoga
- The proposal of the International Day of Yoga celebration was forwarded by Indian PM NarendraModi and the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014, formally recognized 21st June as the International Yoga Day. The resolution was adopted without vote by 177 out of the 193 countries that constitute the UN. It had 175 co-sponsors, the highest ever for any such resolution in the UN General Assembly.
- The root of this day can be traced back to the year 2001, when the proposal for a “World Yoga Day” was observed by Portuguese Yoga Confederation and the Yoga Samkhya Institute.The first World Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June 2002.
- The first steps towards this declaring was taken on a conference, titled ‘Yoga: A Science for World Peace’ which was held in Bengaluru on 4th and 5th December 2011. It was the first time in history, that yoga guru from all parts of the world was endorsing the idea for an International Day for Yoga.
- On June 21st2015the first International Yoga day was celebrated in different parts of the world. It is estimated that around 200 million people worldwide practice yoga. The number stands at 20 million in United States alone. With this declaration more and more people are expected to adopt this method of healing which would benefit them in the long run.
India’s first robotic telescope opens its eyes to the universe
India’s newest telescope located at the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle in Ladakh is also the country’s first robotic telescope and the first one designed to observe dynamic or transient events in the universe.The telescope is being housed in the one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories at 4,500 meters.
Called GROWTH-India, the facility at Hanle is part of a multi-country collaboration of with the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and Israel, known as ‘Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen’ (GROWTH) to observe transient events in the universe.
FACTFILE – India’s First Robotic Telescope
- The fully robotic optical research telescope is designed to capture cosmic events occurring in timescales much shorter than light years – years, days and even hours.
- Universities and research institutes from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Germany, Taiwan and Israel are part of the initiative.
- The joint project of Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB).
- The project is fully funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the PIRE project, administered by Indo US Science and Technology Forum.
- The 70 cm robotic telescope joins other larger facilities at IAO in Hanle – the Himalayan Chandra Telescope, the gamma-ray array telescope (HAGAR), and the imaging Cherenkov telescope (MACE).
Rajasthan’s Kota creates World record with 2 lakh people performing yoga
Kota in Rajasthan established a world record on the International Yoga Day on 21st June, 2018, when around two lakh people performed yoga at one place.
The event took place in the presence of yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Chief Minister VasundharaRajeScindia.
A certificate was given to VasundharaRajeScindia, District Collector GauravGoyal and Baba Ramdev by two Guinness Book of World Record officials who came from London to monitor the proceedings.
Till date, Mysore was holding this record where around 55,506 people performed yoga simultaneously at one place on International Yoga Day.
BishnuRabha Award 2018 presented to DrJanak Jhankar Narzary and Guneswar Bhuyan
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented the Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018 to eminent sculptor Dr. Janak Jhankar Narzary and dance exponent Guneswar Bhuyan at the central Rabha Divas function held at Sonapur Mini Stadium.
The award carries Rs 2 lakh, a citation, sarai and seleng chadar.
Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal urged the society to reinforce human values amongst the youth and indulge in hard work with dedication and perseverance. Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha exemplified great human values, hard work and perseverance.
Bishnu Prasad Rabhacpntributed hugely towards Assam’s art and culture. He worked to materialise his vision of a classless society through a cultural revolution.His work BanoKobang portrays the life worlds of various indigenous Assamese communities of Assam. His other works include Missing Coneng, Sonpahi, Axomiya Kristir Hamuh Abhakh and Atit Axom.
On the same function, the Chief Minister also felicitated ten distinguished persons of Sonapur area for their contribution to the society in different fields.
