Padma Shri awarded to Somdev Devvarman and Kidambi Srikanth
Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth and former tennis player Somdev Devvarman were felicitated with the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award was presented to them in New Delhi.
Srikanth is currently World No 2 while Devvarman, who retired last year won a gold medal for the country at the Asian Games.
India’s first Paralympic gold medallist, Murlikant Petkar also received the Padma Shri. Other awardees are former India cricket captain MS Dhoni, cueist Pankaj Advani, for Padma Bhushan and weightlifter Saikom Mirabhai Chanu with the Padma Shri.
World's Last male White Rhino dies in Kenya
Sudan, world’s last male northern white rhino, has died due to age-related complications. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya said the 45-year-old rhino was euthanized on Monday after his condition worsened.His muscles and bones had degenerated and his skin had extensive wounds, with a deep infection on his back right leg.The rhino is survived by his daughter, Najin, and granddaughter, Fatu. Sudan was listed as “The Most Eligible Bachelor in the World” on the Tinder dating app for a fundraising effort. The last male northern white rhino had been born in Sudan, the last of his kind to be born in the wild.
Google doodle on 102nd Birth Anniversary of Ustad Bismillah Khan
Google celebrated the 102nd birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan. The doodle has been illustrated by a Chennai-based illustrator, Vijay Krish.
Khan, born in 1916, hailed from a family of musicians. His ancestors were court musicians who used to play in Naqqar Khana (an orchestra pit in Mughal-era monuments) in the princely state of Bhojpur, Bihar. His father was a well-known shehnai player who performed in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate, Bihar. He performed at the Red Fort on India’s Independence Day and also on the first Republic Day ceremony on January 26, 1950.Other than Bharat Ratna, he has been awarded with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi. He breathed his last on August 21, 2006, at the age of 90.
Plastic Park to be set up at Deoghar
Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Ananthkumar announced that the Government of India has approved the setting up of a Plastic Park in Deoghar District, Jharkhand.
The project would be set up at a cost of Rs. 120 crores in an area of 150 acres and a range of polymer products including woven sacks, moulded furniture, water tanks, bottles, pipes mosquito nets, etc would be manufactured.It has great potential for attracting investment for setting up an ecosystem for plastic industry and generate employment opportunities for the local populace, the Minister informed.

BrahMos missile test fired Rajasthan's Pokhran
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired at 8:42 am from Rajasthan’s Pokhran test range. Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Congratulated Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO), the Armed Forces and Defence Industry for the successful flight test.
The supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet against a sea-based target from an unknown location. BrahMos is a self-propelled guided missile developed in a joint-venture between India and Russia.
The missile has been named after two rivers– the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva in Russia.
“Paramveer Parwane” Book released by Indian Army
General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff released a book on Paramveer Chakra Awardees – ‘Paramveer Parwane’ on 20 March 2018. The book illustrates the bravery of Paramveer Chakra Awardees from 1947 to 1965 and is written by Dr Prabhakiran Jain published by Medha Books. The book has eleven short stories, poems, and songs highlighting the history of the battles in which the brave soldiers sacrificed their lives.
NCAA is World’s First Trusted Digital Repository
National Cultural Audiovisual Archives (NCAA) project of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, implemented by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) has been certified as the world’s first Trusted Digital Repository as per ISO 16363:2012 standard, granted by Primary Trustworthy Digital Repository Authorisation Body Ltd. (PTAB), United Kingdom.
Leveraging this historic achievement, the plan for the next phase is to integrate about three lakh hours of audiovisuals materials, a corpus estimated based on a scoping survey conducted in 25 cities across the country, on this platform over the next five years.
