PM Modi inaugurated First Smart & Green Highway Eastern Peripheral Expressway
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated to the nation its first smart and green highway, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh.
The 135km long Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal (KGP) Expressway, also known as Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE). It is built at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore.
PM Narendra Modi also inaugurated the first phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The first phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway cost Rs 842 crore on building the 9-km stretch of 14-lane highway.
FACTFILE – Eastern Peripheral Expressway
(i) It is India’s first highway to be lit by solar power besides provisions of rainwater harvesting. It has 8 solar plants with capacity of 4000 KW.
(ii) It is equipped with latest technology for ease. It has been provided with smart and intelligent highway traffic management system and video incident detection system.
(iii) It will divert at least 2 lakh vehicles passing through the national capital daily to this bypass.
(iv) It will provide other facilities including petrol pumps, wash rooms, motels, shops, rest areas, restaurants, repair services etc.
Cochin International Airport world’s first fully solar energy-powered airport
United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) has recognized Cochin International Airport in Kerala as the world’s first fully solar energy-powered airport.
This airport has 15MW solar power plant near the cargo complex of airport which consist of 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres.
This solar plant generates 50,000 units of electricity daily. The plant system is without any battery storage as it is directly connected to the grid.
With its new solar plant, the airport can now produce 60,000 units of electricity every day. This green power project will avoid carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants by more than 3 lakh metric tons, which is equivalent to planting 3 million trees.
Rustom- 2 drone to be delivered to the armed forces by 2020: DRDO
Rustom-II Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will be delivered to the armed forces by 2020. Its engineering will be done by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and Bharat Electronics Ltd.
Key Facts
(i) Rustom-II has been made for utilisation of all 3 services of Indian Armed Forces, chiefly for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance actions.
(ii) It is a long-fortitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that has 20 hours estimated flight time. Its medium-altitude prototype can fly at estimated 22,000 feet. It is propelled by 2 three-bladed NPO saturn engines in which each engine produces more than 450 kilograms force energy.
(iii) It stands 2.4 meters tall with wing area of 20.6 metres and length of 9.5 metres. It can fly at about 280 kilometres per hour.
(iv) It can transport variety of cargos like Medium Range Electro Optic, Synthetic Aperture Radar, Long Range Electro Optic, Electronic Intelligence- ELINT and Situational Awareness Payloads that help in accomplishment of missions during the night.
Earlier, Rustom II has completed first round test at Chitradurga in Karnataka.

Germany to host first edition of global wind summit
The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will be hosted by Germany from September 25-28, 2018 at Hamburg. This will be the largest meeting point for business, networking and information for the whole of the wind industry – onshore and offshore.
Highlights of the first Global Wind Summit
(i) The summit combines two conferences ‘Wind Energy Hamburg’ and ‘Wind Europe’. Wind Europe, in corporation with Wind Energy Hamburg, will accommodate the Global Wind Summit 2018 in the Hamburg Messe.
(ii) Around 1400 exhibitors will gather for Wind Energy Hamburg with the objective to network, do business and maximise visibility before a truly global audience.
(iii) The event will witness participation from over 100 nations including India, China, USA, Spain and Denmark.
(iv) The summit will provide a platform for experts from across the globe to discuss innovative and green technologies for harnessing wind energy making.
India launches its second IT corridor in China
India launched its second “information technology corridor” in China to cash in on the burgeoning Chinese software market.
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has established one more Sino-Indian Digital Collaborative Opportunities Plaza (SIDCOP) platform in China.
Agreements were signed between Indian service providers and Chinese customers at the launch of the corridor by China’s Guiyang Municipal government and the NASSCOM worth about six million US Dollars.
The agreement will promote local offices and help companies from Guiyang to set up software and IT units in India.
Earlier in December 2017, the NASSCOM established its first SIDCUP platform in the Chinese port city of Dalian, which is India’s first IT hub in China.
Sangeeta Bahl has became the oldest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest
Sangeeta Bahl has became the oldest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest at 53 years of age. She is the former model and entrepreneur from Jammu and Kashmir.
She was helped by two Sherpas during her achievement. She has conquered six out of the seven highest peaks of the world.
Sangeeta and her husband Ankur Bahl is also a mount climber. He also climbed Mt Everest in 2016. The couple had pledged to scale seven summits in seven continents, which they clinched, some of them together.
