NIC launches new data centre in Bhubaneswar

National Informatics Centre (NIC) of India launched its fourth national data centre in the country at Bhubaneswar. This becomes the fourth National data centre of National Informatics Centre (NIC) after Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.

The new cloud-enabled National Data Centre was inaugurated by Union Minister of Electronics & IT, Sh. Ravi Shankar Prasad.  

Key Highlights

(i) The new cloud-enabled aims to offer round-the-clock operations with secure hosting for various e-governance applications of Central and State Governments and has ability to support 35,000 virtual servers.

(ii) It will provide benefits like on-demand access to ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructure for easy availability and quick deployment of applications and standardized platforms of deployment. 

(iii) It would allow departments to provision infrastructure and add to the computing capacity “on demand”.


BCCI and UN Environment signed agreement to promote ‘green’ cricket in India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and UN Environment signed an agreement to promote ‘green’ cricket in India. The agreement aims to spread greater awareness about key environmental challenges India facing and highlight alternate and more sustainable solutions.

The agreement was signed by BCCI acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary and Erik Solheim, Executive Director of UN Environment at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

 BCCI will endeavor to reduce their environmental impact by greening operations and engaging fans and cricketers in green initiatives.

It will help to make cricket green and sensitize spectators towards minimizing waste generation during matches and also focus on phasing out single-use plastic across stadiums in the country. 


Former Chief Justice  Nasirul Mulk Named Pakistan’s Caretaker PM

Former chief justice Nasir Ul Mulk named as caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan until general elections are held in July 2018. The decision comes ahead of the dissolution of the current government and parliament.

Nasir served as chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court for just over a year in 2014. From November 2013 to 2014 he also served as acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan.

The interim administration usually does not make any major decisions until the new government is elected, though it may be forced to act to shore up the economy amid a worsening macro-economic outlook.

Sudha Balakrishnan appointed as First CFO of RBI

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Sudha Balakrishnan as the first Chief Financial Officer (CFO). She will be the twelfth executive director of the Reserve Bank of India and will have term period of three years.

Key Facts

(i) She will be in-charge of RBI’s balance-sheet to make sure accounting policies and processes comply with guidelines.

(ii) She will be in-charge of government and bank account department, which progressions government transactions and income collections.

(iii) She will also supervise Reserve Bank of India’s investments in India and overseas and will also be in-charge of dividend Reserve Bank of India pays to government, which is vital in final budgetary calculations.


Gaj Yatra launched in Garo Hills of Meghalaya

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change rolled out ‘Gaj Yatra’, in Garo Hills of Meghalaya with an aim to protect elephants in the state. 

This Yatra is the continuation of the campaign that was launched in August 2017 on the occasion of the World Elephant Day.

Highlights of the Gaj Yatra

(i) The Gaj Yatra was organized by the Wildlife Trust of India in partnership with the State Forest Department. 

(ii) In this campaign, an elephant mascot will be taken around regions frequented by jumbo masses for creating awareness among the people. 

(iii) The Gaj Yatra is going to be traveling through the Garo Hills landscape of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya over the next four days. It will help in securing a safer future for the region’s elephants and also tribal communities.


Fourth International Yoga Day Celebrations Main Event to be Organized in Dehradun 

Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH announced that the main event of 4th International Yoga Day celebrations (IDY-2018)  will be held on 21st June 2018 at Dehradun in Uttrakhand.

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) has been selected as the venue for Mass Yoga Demonstration (Main Event). Shri Kotecha is in Dehradun to initiate the preparations regarding this mega event.

International Yoga Day

(i) International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually on 21 June since its inception in 2015. 

(ii) The idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the UNGA, on 27 September 2014, UNGA held informal consultations on the draft resolution entitled “International Day of Yoga”, on 14 October 2014. The consultations were convened by the delegation of India.
