Zuben Garg to receive PETA award
Assamese singer Zubeen Garg will be honoured with the ‘Hero to Animals Award’ from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for raising his voice against animal sacrifice.
Currently, while performing at a Bihu function near the temple he had expressed his anguish over the ritual of animal sacrifice and appealed for putting an end to the practice.
Previous year, following various efforts by PETA India and People for Animals, the Municipal Council of Kullu had issued an executive order refusing to grant permission for animal sacrifices that were scheduled to take place on the last day of the Kullu Dussehra festival.
Other recipients of PETA India’s “Hero to Animals Award” include actresses Rani Mukherji, Shilpa Shetty, Zarine Khan, Asin and comedian Cyrus Broacha.
1.5 lakh affordable houses sanctioned for urban poor under PMAY(urban)
The Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has approved the construction of another 1.5 lakh affordable houses for the benefit of urban poor under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) with an investment of Rs.7,227cr with central assistance of Rs.2,209 cr.
The approval was given in the 34th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee, held in Delhi on May 30, 2018.

Lt Gen Ranbir Singh appointed Northern Army Commander
Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, of Dogra Regiment has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Northern Army Command in Udhampur. Singh replaced Lt Gen Anbu who will take charge as Vice Chief of the Indian Army on June 1.
About Lt Gen Ranbir Singh
(i) Lt Gen Ranbir Singh hails from Jalandhar district of Punjab. He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Kapurthala, National Defence Academy, Pune and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
(ii) Currently, Singh is Deputy Chief of the Army Staff who was the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) when India had carried out surgical strikes across the LoC on the intervening night of September 28 and 29 in 2016.
(iii) He has held various important Command, Staff and Instructor appointments during his career. He is considered to be an expert at counter insurgency operations, operational art and information operations.
(iv) During his career, he has been awarded with Yudh Seva Medal (2010) as the Brigadier of 181 Mountain Brigade and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal twice (2015, 2018) for his service.
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) observed: 31st May
Every year, on 31 May, World Health Organization and partners observe World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) with the aim to highlights the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption
The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is: “Tobacco and heart disease.”
In 1987, May 31 was declared as World No Tobacco Day by the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Tobacco is responsible for over 1 in 10 fatalities in the world. India is one among the top four users of tobacco. Nearly 11.2 % smokers in the world are Indians.
A Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2) report, India is the second largest consumer of tobacco products with 28.6 % of the population addicted to it.
