- Awarded to those who have conferred the greatest benefits to humankind.
- Alfred Nobel in his will, he bequeathed all of his “remaining realisable assets” to be used to establish five prizes which became known as “Nobel Prizes” in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace categories.
Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901 & Prize in Economics started in 1968. - Prize includes = A gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary award of 11 million SEK (=1 million US $)

- Goldin gives an account of women’s earnings and their labour market participation
- She discovered the key drivers of the gender gap in labour market and employment.
- Women’s choices have been limited by marriage and domestic responsibility, family
- Female labour participation forms a U-shaped curve in the last two century
Participation of married women decreased with transition from agrarian to industrial society due to Industrial revolution in 19th century, but increased due to growth of service sector in the early 20th century. - The gap in the labour participation has increased after the birth of the first child.
- The award was established in 1968 by an endowment “in perpetuity” from Sweden’s central bank, Sveriges Riksbank.
