Preparation for Essay
First timers think they will write an excellent essay in the final exam itself, whereas experienced aspirants believe that since they had already studied a lot of GS content, it will alone be enough to write a good essay. Devoted adequate time to this paper and collected useful quotes and if needed, prepare some notes.

1. What and from where to prepare

Most of the content you write in Essay will come from your GS preparation.  Read non-fiction articles, posts, analysis on important topics from online sources or magazines link Yojana/EPW/Economic Survey or newspaper editorial (The Hindu, Indian Express/liveMint) or books.
2. Improve Vocabulary
Use some standard English word, or good phrase. The best way to build your vocabulary is by reading English newspapers/Magazines. Don’t use too many of these tough words.
Tips to write better Essay

1. Choose Topic(s) wisely

Read all the topics thoroughly. You should choose the topic you know most about. If possible, try to avoid conflicting, sensitive and provocative topics. It is bit tough to do justice to the topic and trying to be neutral, without flowing with emotions and personal bias.

2. Brainstorming

Once you have selected the topic, give yourself sometime (may be 5 minutes) to bring in every relevant points you have read or heard about the topic. Write this points in rough (with Pencil) so that you don’t forget to put these in, while writing the essay.

Even while writing the essay, if any important point comes to your mind, write it immediately in rough space and use it in appropriate place.

3. Present ideas in orderly fashion

Arrange the ideas in an orderly fashion, and write these in a concise manner. More credit is given for effective and exact expression.

In essay, examiners will pay special attention to not just the content, but also the language, coherence and the way you organise your write-up.

Take adequate care to not commit any fundamental spelling or grammatical errors.

4. Simple language and expression

Essay must be simple and clear with as little jargon as possible, to present a clear thought.
Try to make sentences short and meaningful.

5. Structure

Once you have the rough points in hand, start writing the essay following a logical flow or structure.

  1. Introduction of the topic
  2. Historical Background
  3. Main Topic issue
  4. Current scenario, any recent issue related to the topic
  5. Pros and Cons of the issue
  6. Way Ahead/ Suggested measures to improve the scenario
  7. Brief Conclusion

 6. Additional advantages (Write only if only you know exactly )

  • Mention any figures or number ( if you remember )
  • Relevant quotes by famous personalities.
  • Relevant government schemes and policies.
  • Any recent judgement(s)

Bureaucratic attitude must be visible in the essay.

  • Try to give  a balanced picture.
  • Take a diplomatic stand.
  • Avoid writing unrealistic solutions.
  • Be respectful toward the opposite views also.

What to AVOID in Essay
  • Do not focus excessively only on one point, or one dimension. Try to cover all angle and present a multi-dimensional view.
  • Don’t get carried away and write only what is asked
  • Don’t take any extreme or highly unpopular stand in any issue. Try to present your opinion but present case for other views also.
  • Don’t resort to name-calling.
  • Don’t get too political and too personal.
  • Don’t present problems  only, try to provide possible solutions too.
  • Don’t criticise the government excessively. ( You are not a THE HINDU Columnist!!)

Good Luck.
