IIT Guwahati researchers feature in world’s top 2% scientists’ list released by Stanford University

A total of 21 researchers and faculty members from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has been featured among the world’s top 2% Scientists List created by Stanford University, US.

Professor TG Sitharam along with 20 other faculty members have been ranked for their research publications citations using all Scopus author profiles as of September 1, 2022 and their lifetime contribution to their specific fields of research in the list. 

The IIT Guwahati faculty members featured in the Stanford University list are from various scientific fields, including the Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Electrical and Electronics.

Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. The selection is based on the top 1 lakh scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2 per cent or above in the sub-field.


President Murmu flags off first Kolkata-Agartala express train 

President Droupadi Murmu and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha flagged off the Guwahati-Kolkata-Guwahati train from Agartala Railway Station up to Agartala. 

President Murmu and Chief Minister Saha and also launched another leg of the Agartala-Jiribam-Agartala Jan Shatabdi Express to Khongsang in Manipur.

Key Points

  • President Murmu inaugurated the Tripura Judicial Academy and laid the foundation stone of the National Law University, Tripura.
  • President Murmu will lay the foundation stone for the Supercomputer facility Param Kamrupa and the facility for the design and development of high power microwave components at IIT Guwahati. 
  • The President will also lay the foundation stone of the Regional Institute of Medical College and Hospital at Dhubri, National Institute of Virology (NIV) at Dibrugarh (Assam) and Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh).
  • The President laid the foundation stone for 100 Model Secondary Schools for the tea garden areas. 
  • She introduced 3000 Model Anganwadi Centres and a modern Cargo cum Coaching Terminal at Agyathuri near Guwahati. 
  • The president also inaugurated Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s Rail-Fed Petroleum Storage Depot at Moinarbond in Silchar and also introduced two sections of National Highways connecting Silchar to Badarpur and Gohpur to Holong of Assam.

Logistics Performance Index 2022

According to a report released by the commerce and Industry Ministry, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Gujarat are among the 15 States and UTs categorised as achievers in the logistics index chart 2022.

The index is an indicator of the efficiency of logistical services necessary for promoting exports and economic growth.

Key Points

  • Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Puducherry, Sikkim and Tripura are the other States categorised as fast movers in the ranking.  
  • Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Mizoram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, and Arunachal Pradesh are among the 15 States and UTs rated in the aspirers category.
  • The other States and UTs in the achievers category include Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
  • The first logistics report was released in 2018. 
  • The index intends to increase the focus on strengthening the performance of logistics across states for enhancing the nation’s trade and lowering transaction costs. 

About Logistics Performance Index 

  • The Logistics Performance Index (LPI) is an interactive benchmarking tool created created by the World Bank to help countries identify the challenges and opportunities they face in their performance on trade logistics and what they can do to improve their performance. 
  • It is the weighted average of the country scores on six key dimensions: customs performance, infrastructure quality, ease of arranging shipments, logistics services quality, consignments tracking and tracing and timeliness of shipments. 
  • India ranks 44 in the Logistics Performance Index 2018. 

Hyderabad wins World Green City Award 2022 

The city of Hyderabad has won the prestigious ‘World Green City Award 2022’ . Hyderabad is the only Indian city that was selected for the ‘World Green City 2022,’ award, the best across all six categories.

The city has also won ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ at the International Association of Horticulture Producers (AIPH) 2022 held in Jeju, South Korea. 

Key Points

  •  Hyderabad won the World Green Cities Award for taking initiatives relying on better use of plants and nature to make better city environments and for helping fulfill local aspirations for economic, social, and environmental resilience.
  • The award is a testimony to the continuous efforts and focuses of the Telangana government on increasing the green cover in the state through its flagship program “Telangana Ku Haritha Haram” (TKHH).
  •  The program aims to increase the tree cover of the state from 24% to 33% of the total area of the state.

International Solar Alliance’s Fifth Assembly will be held in New Delhi

International Solar Alliance’s Fifth Assembly to be held in New Delhi from 17th to 20th October, 2022. India currently holds the position of President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly as per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Key Points

  • Ministers, missions and delegates from 109 Member and Signatory Countries are set to participate in this meeting.
  • The Assembly is the apex decision-making body of ISA, in which each Member Country is represented. This body makes decisions concerning the implementation of the ISA’s Framework Agreement and coordinated actions to be taken to achieve its objective. 
  • The Assembly meets annually at the ministerial level at the ISA’s seat. 
  • The Fifth Assembly of the ISA will deliberate on the key initiatives of ISA on three critical issues of energy access, energy security, and energy transition.
  • World leaders from ISA Member Countries will also discuss the strategic plan of the ISA in Programmatic Support for LDC and SIDS Member Countries, Capacity Building support to all developing Member Countries, and Analytics & Advocacy support to all Member Countries. 
  • The 5th Assembly is expected to lead to a greater consensus among countries for promotion of solar power. Increased international cooperation will be the backbone of energy transition, propelling investment and creating millions of new green jobs in this crucial decade of climate action.

International Solar Alliance (ISA) 

  • The International Solar Alliance is an international organisation with 109 member and signatory countries. 
  • It works with governments to improve energy access and security worldwide and promote solar power as a sustainable way to transition to a carbon-neutral future. 
  • ISA’s mission is to unlock US$ 1 trillion of investments in solar by 2030 while reducing the cost of the technology and its financing. 
  • It promotes the use of solar energy in the Agriculture, Health, Transport and Power Generation sectors. 
  • ISA member countries are driving change by enacting policies and regulations, sharing best practices, agreeing on common standards, and mobilising investments.
  • With the signing and ratification of the ISA Framework Agreement by 15 countries in 2017, ISA became the first international intergovernmental organization to be headquartered in India.

Cabinet approved the scheme “Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE)

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently approved the Prime Minister’s development initiative for the North East region (PM-DevINE).

PM-DevINE was announced in the Union Budget 2022-23 to address development gaps in the North Eastern Region (NER).

Key Points 

  • The PM-DevINE is a 100% Central Government funded plan and will be administered by the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER).
  • The PM-DevINE will be operational for the remaining four years of the 15th Finance Commission, from 2022-23 to 2025-26 and will have an outlay of Rs 6,600 crore.
  • PM-DevINE will be implemented by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), through the North Eastern Council or central ministries and agencies.
  • The PM-DevINE will lead to the creation of infrastructure, support industries, social development projects, and create livelihood activities for youth and women.
  • PMDevINE will provide support to infrastructure and social development projects which may be larger in size and will also provide an end–to-end development solution instead of isolated projects.

India’s first Slender Loris Sanctuary will be established in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government has notified the country’s first Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary in Karur and Dindigul districts.

Key Points

  • The Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary will be covering 11,806 hectares in the Karur and Dindigul districts of the State.
  • The Kadavur slender loris sanctuary is to cover Vedasandur, Dindigul East and Natham taluks in Dindigul district and Kadavur taluk in Karur district. 
  • The government notified ‘Kadavur slender loris sanctuary’ under Section 26 (A)(1)(b) of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • The species is considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

About Slender Loris

  • The slender lorises are a genus of loris native to India and Sri Lanka.
  • The genus comprises two species, the red slender loris found in Sri Lanka and the gray slender loris from Sri Lanka and India.
  • They are small nocturnal mammals that are arboreal in nature as they spend most of their life on trees, travelling along the tops of branches with slow and precise movements.
  • The species acts as a biological predator of pests in agricultural crops and benefits farmers.
  • The survival of the species depends on its habitat improvement, conservation efforts and mitigation of threats.

Prime Minister declared Modhera as India’s first solar-powered village

The Prime Minister declared Modhera, a village in the Mehsana district of Gujarat as India’s first solar-powered village.

Key Points

  • The Modhera village has a ground-mounted solar power plant, and over 1,300 rooftop solar systems with 1kW capacity have been installed on houses to generate electricity.
  • Modhera was well known for the Sun temple, now it will also be known as a solar-powered village. 
  • The people in the village wouldn’t pay for electricity, rather they could start selling it and earn from energy produced by the solar panel by selling it to the government grid. 
  • It will generate employment at the village level, and ultimately improve the standard of living.
  • The project will enhance the sustainable implementation of various welfare projects in the area. The people of the area will be able to save 60-100% of their electricity bills. 

Jharkhand record country’s highest percentage of child marriage

According to the latest demographic sample survey by the Union Home Ministry, Jharkhand has recorded the highest percentage of underage girls getting married.

The Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report contains estimates of various demographic, fertility and mortality indicators based on the data collected through one of the largest demographic surveys in the world covering about 8.4 million sample population. 

Key Points

  • According to the survey brought out by the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs, the percentage of girls getting married before attaining majority is as high as 5.8 in Jharkhand.
  • As per the survey, the percentage of females who got effectively married before reaching 18 years of age is 1.9 at the national level and varies from 0.0 in Kerala to 5.8 in Jharkhand.
  • In Jharkhand, child marriages accounted for 7.3% of marriages in rural areas and three per cent in urban areas. 
  • Jharkhand and West Bengal are the only two States in the country where more than half of the women are married before attaining the age of 21 years.
  • In West Bengal 54.9 percent of girls are married before attaining the age of 21 years, while in Jharkhand is 54.6 percent as against the national average of 29.5 per cent.

Goa will host the 37th edition of the National Games in October 2023

The Indian Olympic Association has confirmed that Goa will host the 37th edition of the National Games in October next year. 

The Goa state government has conveyed to the IOA its in-principle approval to host the next edition of the National Games.

Goa was set to host the 36th edition of the National Games but the IOA had to shift the venue to Gujrat, who agreed to conduct the event in a short span of time.

The Goa delegation may receive the IOA flag at the Closing Ceremony of the 36th National Games on 12th October 2022 in Surat, Gujarat.

The 35th National Games of India were held in Kerala in 2015.

Kerala’s Pullampara named first fully digital literate panchayat

The Pullumpara village panchayat in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala has become the first digitally literate panchayat in the country. 

Digital literacy was imperative for the public to get government services as well as connect with the global knowledge network.

Key Points

  • The project was started on August 15, 2021 with the plans to impart digital literacy to all residents of the panchayats under the Digi Pullampara project. 
  • The project mission is to achieve total digital literacy and empower the residents to get access to government services available through the online mode. 
  • Full digital literacy was gained by Pullampara panchayat’s ‘DigiPullampara’ project. 
  • The left democratic front (LDF) government in Kerala had announced to extend digital literacy to all the residents. The government has also created Kerala – Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) to provide an internet connection to all and to ensure its promise of making access to the internet a basic right.

World’s largest jungle safari park will be set up in Haryana

Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the world’s largest safari park will be set up in the state. The safari park will be spread across an area of 10000 acres in the Aravalli Mountain Range of Gurugram and Nuh District.

Key Points

  • Haryana’s Jungle Safari project will be a joint project of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and the Government of Haryana. The central government will also help with the funds to Haryana for the project.
  • The proposed Aravalli Park will be 5 times the size and will include a large herbarium, an aviary, four zones for big cars, a large area for herbivores, an area for exotic animal/birds, an underwater world, natural trails, visitors, tourism zones, botanical garden, biomes, equatorial, tropical, coastal, desert, etc.
  • The Jungle safari scheme will not only boost tourism but also provide employment opportunities to local residents.
  • This project will be the largest such project in the world. Currently, Sharjah is the home to the largest curated safari park outside Africa, which covers an area of about 2,000 acres. The park was opened in February 2022.

Union Environment Ministry set up Cheetah task force

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has constituted a Task Force for monitoring Cheetah introduction in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh and other suitable designated areas.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) would facilitate the working of the Cheetah Task Force and render all necessary help.  

Key Points

  • According to the ministry the task force has been constituted for a period of 2 years.
  • The Task Force has been constituted to review, progress and monitor the health status of Cheetah.
  • It will also look over the upkeep of the quarantine & soft release enclosures, protection status of the entire area, adherence to the defined protocols by forest & veterinary officials.
  • It will suggest and advise on development of tourism infrastructure in the fringe areas of Kuno National Park and other Protected Areas. 
  • The Task Force regularly interacts with Cheetah mitras and local communities for their awareness raising and also involvement in protection of Cheetahs in particular & area in general.
  • In addition to these, the task force will also be responsible for monitoring hunting skills and adaptation of Cheetahs to the habitat of Kuno National Park.
  • Cheetah restoration is part of a prototype or model for restoration of original cheetah habitats and their biodiversity, which aimed at putting a check to degradation and rapid loss of biodiversity. 

Pankaj Advani wins gold at IBSF World Billiards Championships in Kuala Lumpur

India’s Pankaj Advani has won a gold medal at the 2022 IBSF World Billiards Championship in Kuala Lumpur. This is Pankaj Advani’s 25th world title. 

He defeated compatriot Sourav Kothari  by ‘4-0’ in the 150-up billiards final at the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur. This is Advani’s  title for the fifth time in a row.

Advani’s last world title came over 12 months ago in Qatar where he won the IBSF 6-Red Snooker World Cup.


RBI Releases Concept Note On Central Bank Digital Currency

The Reserve Bank of India has released a Concept Note on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The purpose of this Concept Note is to create awareness about CBDCs in general and the planned features of the digital Rupee, in particular. 

It is a sovereign currency issued by Central Banks in alignment with their monetary policy.

Key Points

  • The Reserve Bank defines CBDC as the legal tender issued by a central bank in a digital form. 
  • It is substantially not different from banknotes, but being digital it is likely to be easier, faster and cheaper. 
  • It also has all the transactional benefits of other forms of digital money.
  • It’s a digital bearer instrument that can be stored, transferred, and transmitted by all kinds of digital payment systems and services.
  • The concept note also discusses key considerations such as technology and design choices, possible uses of Digital Rupee, issuance mechanisms, etc. 
  • It examines the implications of the introduction of CBDC on the banking system, monetary policy, financial stability, and analyses privacy issues.

AFSPA extended in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh for six months

The Central government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act — known as AFSPA for another six months in 12 districts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

It has also been extended in certain parts of five other districts of the two northeastern states to facilitate the armed forces to continue the anti-insurgency operations.

The AFSPA will be extended for six months in nine districts of Nagaland: Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Zunheboto and and 16 police stations areas in four other districts — Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Wokha.

Nagaland has 16 districts while Arunachal Pradesh has 26 districts. This was announced in a notification by the Home Ministry. 

About the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)

  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), passed by the Indian Parliament in 1958 to the Indian Armed Forces to maintain public order in “disturbed areas”.
  • The Disturbed Areas (Special Courts) Act of 1976 states that once an area is designated as “disturbed,” it must remain that way for at least six months. 
  • One such law, which was passed on September 11, 1958, applied to the Naga Hills, which were then a part of Assam. It gradually expanded to the other Seven Sister States in northeastern India during the next decades.

Indian-origin Vivek Murthy is appointed as US representative on WHO executive board

US President Joe Biden has nominated Indian-origin Dr. Vivek Murthy to serve as the country’s representative on the executive board of the World Health Organisation.

Dr Murthy will serve as the US Representative on WHO Executive Board alongside his continued duties as the US Surgeon General.

Key Points

  • In March 2021, he was confirmed by the US Senate to serve as the 21st Surgeon General of the country. 
  • Previously, he served as the 19th Surgeon General under President Barack Obama. 
  • He is the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. 
  • He commands a uniformed service of over 6,000 dedicated public health officers, serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations.
  • He is also the first Indian-origin Surgeon General of the US, he was raised in Miami and graduated from Harvard, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Yale School of Management.

India emerges as the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar

India emerges as the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar and world’s 2nd largest exporter of sugar. 

Key Points

  • In Sugar Season (Oct-Sep) 2021-22, a record of more than 5000 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) of sugarcane was produced in the country out of which about 3574 LMT of sugarcane was crushed by sugar mills to produce about 394 LMT of sugar (Sucrose). Out of this, 35 LMT sugar was diverted to ethanol production and 359 LMT sugar was produced by sugar mills.
  • During 2020-21, India made records with the highest exports of about 109.8 LMT with no financial assistance and earned foreign currency of about Rs 40,000 crore for the country.
  • Timely Government interventions since the last 5 years have been crucial in building the sugar sector step by step from taking them out of financial distress in 2018-19 to the stage of self-sufficiency in 2021-22.
  • During the Sugar season 2021-22, sugar mills procured sugarcane worth more than 1.18 lakh crore and released payment of more than 1.12 lakh crore with no financial assistance (subsidy) from Government of India.
  • Government has been encouraging sugar mills to divert sugar to ethanol and also to export surplus sugar so that sugar mills may make payment of cane dues to farmers in time and also mills may have better financial conditions to continue their operations. 

SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 will be awarded to Yunqing Tang Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA.

Ms. Yunqing’s works “display a remarkable combination of sophisticated techniques, in which the arithmetic and geometry of modular curves and of Shimura varieties play a central role, and her results and methods are bound to have major impact on future research in this area.”

Tang’s latest joint work with Frank Calegari and Vesselin Dimitrov based on modular equations is of great significance and has connections with Ramanujan’s own work.

The prize will be awarded at the International Conference on Number Theory during December 20-22, 2022 at SASTRA University.

About SASTRA Ramanujan Prize

  • The award was instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) in 2005. 
  • The award includes a cash prize of $10,000 and it is presented annually to individuals aged 32 and below, who made an outstanding contribution to the field of mathematics.

Ajay Bhadoo has been appointed as the Deputy Election Commissioner 

Ajay Bhadoo has been appointed as the Deputy Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India. 

Ajay Bhadoo is a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) officer of the Gujarat cadre. He has been appointed as the deputy election commissioner until July 24, 2024 or till further order, whichever is earlier.

He was appointed as Joint Secretary to former President Ram Nath Kovind in July 2020. His two-month extension as Joint Secretary in the President’s Secretariat ended on September 25. 

Earlier, he has also served as Gujarat’s Vadodara Municipal Commissioner.

Prime Minister will inaugurate sixth edition of India Mobile Congress

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will launch 5G services in the country and will also inaugurate the 6th Edition of India Mobile Congress 2022 (IMC-2022). The IMC 2022 is scheduled to be held from 1st to 4th October with the theme of “New digital Universe”.

  • The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach USD 450 billion by 2035.
  • The 5G technology will provide seamless coverage, high data rate, low latency, and highly reliable communications. 
  • The 5G service is expected to unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits, serving as a transformational force for Indian society.
  • The 5G to be launched by the Prime Minister in select cities will progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.

Srishti Bakshi wins ‘Changemaker’ award at the UN SDG Action Awards

Srishti Bakshi, a women’s rights activist from India, was honoured with the ‘Changemaker’ award at the UN SDG Action Awards held at a ceremony in Bonn, Germany. 

The activist has traveled 3,800km around the country in less than a year to raise awareness on gender-based violence and inequality. She was awarded for “confronting gender-based violence and advocating for safe access to public spaces.”

The other award winners are ‘SUPvivors say NO MORE’ in the Mobilise category, ‘The Masungi Story’ in the Inspire category honouring youth rewriting the future of forgotten watersheds at Masungi Geosreserve in the Philippines and ‘CyprusInno in the Connect category’.


Asha Parekh will be honoured with 52nd Dadasaheb Phalke award

Veteran actress Asha Parekh has been declared the recipient of the 2020 Dadasaheb Phalke award. The award will be presented at the National Film Award ceremony in New Delhi.

The jury for the selection of 52nd Dadasaheb Phalke award consisted of five members from the film industry.

Ms Asha Parekh is a renowned film actress, director and producer and an accomplished Indian classical dancer. She was conferred the Padma Shri in 1992.

About the Dadasaheb Phalke Award

  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s largest laurel in cinema. 
  • The award was first presented in 1969 by the Indian Government to honor Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian film.
  • It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  • Dadasaheb Phalke award winners are given in the form of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹1,000,000.
  • The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani, who was honoured at the 17th National Film Awards.

SC-ST hub conclave organized by Ministry of MSME in Gujarat

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has organized a national SC-ST hub conclave in Gujarat to spread awareness about the National SC-ST Hub (NSSH) Scheme and other Schemes of the Ministry.

Key Points

  • More than 300 SC-ST entrepreneurs participated in the event. The conclave provided a platform for aspiring and existing SC-ST entrepreneurs to interact with CPSEs, lending institutions, GeM, RSETI, TRIFED etc. 
  • Speaking at the event, Dr. Solanki said  more SC-ST entrepreneurs from Gujarat State should take benefits available under the NSSH Scheme. 
  • He also urged the bankers present in the audience to prioritize credit support to the SC-ST entrepreneurs so that they may not face any difficulty in augmenting their business capacities. 
  • He stressed upon Prime Minister’s vision of becoming job providers instead of job seekers and emphasized the participation of SC-ST entrepreneurs in strengthening the Indian Economy.

About NSSH scheme 

  • The ministry of MSME launched the National Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe Hub (NSSH) scheme to promote an inclusive economy and entrepreneurship among SC/ST communities.
  • It has been set up to provide professional support to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Entrepreneurs to fulfil the obligations under the Central Government Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises Order 2012.
  • The hub leverages the Stand Up India programme.

The President of India presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022 at a function held in New Delhi.

Key Points

  • Indore has been adjudged India’s cleanest city for the sixth time in a row, 
  • Surat and Navi Mumbai were named as the 2nd and 3rd cleanest cities respectively. 
  • Madhya Pradesh secured the first position, followed by Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra in the category of best performing states in ‘Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022’. 
  • Haryana was in the second position while Tamil Nadu was third.
  • Among smaller states and Union territories, Andaman and Nicobar secured the first position followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Sikkim. 
  • Telangana won the first prize under the large states category under the Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2022 which looks into the sanitation status of rural areas.
  • In the category of cities having population fewer than one lakh, Maharashtra’s Panchgani was ranked number one, followed by Chhattisgarh’s Patan (NP) and Maharashtra’s Karhad. 
  • Haridwar was adjudged the cleanest Ganga town in the category of more than 1 lakh population, followed by Varanasi and Rishikesh. 
  • Bijnor was ranked the first among Ganga towns with fewer than one lakh population. followed by Kannauj and Garhmukhteshwar respectively. 
  • In to the survey, Maharashtra’s Deolali was adjudged the country’s cleanest Cantonment Board.

Rhino Memorial in Kaziranga National Park

The Kaziranga National Park in Assam has got a memorial made out of the ash of burnt rhino horns. The memorial was unveiled by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Key Points

  • The memorial having three rhino sculptures was named “Abode of the Unicorns”, it has three rhino sculptures – an adult male, an adult female and a calf.
  • It also has three statutes of forest guards, created using different materials.
  • The rhino statues were created using ashes collected from around 2,500 rhino horns that were burnt to flames by the Assam Government.
  • The rhino memorials in Kaziranga National Park are crafted by the sculptor Biju Das and the statues of the forest guards were sculpted by Biren Singha.
  • It takes around four months to finish the whole job and the estimated cost of this project is Rs.10 to 12 lakh.

India has won United Nations Award for National Health Mission

India has won the United Nations (UN) award for its ‘India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI)’. The initiative is a large-scale hypertension intervention under the National Health Mission (NHM).

The IHCI won the ‘2022 UN Interagency Task Force and WHO Special Programme on Primary Health Care Award’ at the UN General Assembly side event held at New York in USA

Key Points

  • The IHCI has been recognized for its unique and extraordinary work within India’s existing primary healthcare system. 
  • The award recognizes the outstanding commitment and action of India to prevent and control Non-Communicable Diseases and deliver integrated people-centric primary care. 
  • The initiative to control hypertension in the primary care system will contribute to reducing deaths due to heart attacks, kidney failures, and stroke.
  • IHCI has improved the linkage between population-based screening initiatives with health care. 
  • It has also been able to support and strengthen the existing healthcare delivery system and hypertension control interventions under the National Health Mission. 

About India Hypertension Control Initiative

The IHCI was introduced in 2017 and regulated in a phased manner to cover more than 130 districts across 23 states.

Under the initiative, more than 34 lakh people with hypertension are taking treatment in government health facilities, including Ayushman Bharat Health Wellness Centres.


India’s first plant-based meat shipped to the US 

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Authority (APEDA) has announced that Greenest has shipped India’s first consignment of plant-based meat products under the vegan food category from Nadiad in Gujarat to California, US. 

The plant-based consignment is 5000 kg and consists of mini samosas, hot and spicy strips, momos, spring rolls, nuggets, grilled patty, and other vegan products.

Greenest is India’s pioneer in plant-based protein products. It’s investors include names like Better Bite Ventures, a New Zealand-based dedicated Alt Protein VC fund, Magnetic and Sachid Madan, former chief executive of ITCs’s frozen snacks business.

Greenest has collaborated with Wholesome Foods to export its plant-based products to the US.


Uttar Pradesh Legislature reserves a women-only day

The Uttar Pradesh Legislature made history after both the Houses decided to reserve the day for women legislators to speak. The move was met with praise from both the ruling and opposition parties. 

The whole day was reserved for women members to raise women-centric issues, which happened for the first time in the history of UP assembly. 

The chief minister Yogi Adityanath initiated the day-long session during which only women members spoke in the House. He assured the women members of the house that whatever issues and problems they will raise, government will sympathetically work to solve them. 

Many women members thanked the government for this initiative and said that it is the power of democracy that a whole day was reserved for women.


Indian Author Meena Kandasamy wins the German PEN award

Indian author and poet Meena Kandasamy has been announced winner of the Hermann Kesten Prize by the PEN Centre in Germany’s Darmstadt.

Her novels have been shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Jhalak Prize and the Hindu Lit Prize. 

Kandasamy is a feminist and anti-caste activist whose work revolves around the issue of gender, caste, sexuality, patriarchy, and oppression by the Brahmanical system. She previously held an editorial role at the English-language magazine ‘The Dalit’. 

The Hermann Kesten Prize is given to the personalities who stand up for the rights of persecuted authors and journalists.

The winner will receive an amount of €20,000 ($19,996) as prize money. This year, the PEN Center is also honouring the website “Weiter Schreiben” (German for “Keep writing”) with a special award for encouragement, for giving authors in exile and writers from conflict zones a platform to express their thoughts.

CM of Manipur N. Biren Singh introduce web portal ‘CM Da Haisi’

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has launched a web portal to enable people to redress their grievances, and provide a platform to raise corruption-related issues. The web portal is called “CM Da Haisi,”(Let’s inform the CM).

The Public Grievances Redressal and Anti-Corruption Cell stationed at CM Secretariat will use the portal to communicate with the relevant departments to redress the grievances of the public within a stipulated time and also to provide the actionable complaints to the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department for further inquiry and investigation. 

This portal will enable fast redressal of public grievances and also provide a platform to raise corruption-related issues.

It will further enable us to bring transparency and accountability in governance and delivery of public services. 


India’s first Avalanche Monitoring Radar installed in Sikkim

The Indian Army and Defence Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE) have jointly installed the Avalanche Monitoring Radar in north Sikkim. This radar, a first of its kind in India.

Key Points

  • The radar was made operational by DGRE, a laboratory under the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), which is involved in forecasting and mitigation of avalanche hazards faced by the Army in the Himalayan region.
  • It uses a series of short micro wave pulses, which are scattered at the target and can detect an avalanche in less than three seconds. 
  • The radar can permanently scan the targeted slope for avalanche release and track the path of the avalanche and its size in case it is triggered.
  • The radar can see through snow, fog as well as in the night, making it an all weather solution. It covers an area of two sq.km, obviating the requirement to place additional instruments in dangerous avalanche-prone areas, the officer elaborated.
  • The radar is also linked to an alarm system, enabling automatic control and warning measures in case an avalanche is triggered. Images and videos of the event are automatically recorded for future analysis by experts. 

The 10th India-Brazil-South Africa Dialogue Forum (IBSA) Trilateral Ministerial Commission meeting held in New York

The 10th India-Brazil-South Africa Dialogue Forum (IBSA) Trilateral Ministerial Commission meeting was held in New York. Dr. S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, presided over the meeting.

The IBSA is a trilateral, developmental initiative between India, Brazil and South Africa to promote South-South cooperation and exchange.

Key Points

  • The agenda of the meeting was on mutual interests including cooperation in multilateral organizations, South-South cooperation, UNSC reform, 2030 agenda, Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, countering terrorism, and financing for developmental activities.
  • They also held discussions on regional issues like the African Union, the Middle East peace process, and the situation in Ukraine. 
  • The Ministers supported the aspiration of African countries to have a permanent presence in the United Nations Security Council. 
  • They also supported India and Brazil’s efforts to get permanent seats in the Security Council. 
  • India will host the 6th IBSA Summit on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in November this year.

India launched the ‘Innovation Roadmap of the Mission Integrated Biorefineries’, at Global Clean Energy Action Forum-2022 

India announces the launch of the “Innovation Roadmap of the Mission Integrated Biorefineries” at the first-ever Global Clean Energy Action Forum-2022 at Pittsburgh, in the United States. 

The Mission Integrated Biorefineries was developed in cooperation with Brazil, Canada, European Commission and the United Kingdom.

Key Points

  • The Mission’s goal is to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to accelerate the commercialisation of integrated biorefineries.
  • The Mission aims at greater international collaboration and the need for increased financing for Energy RD&D (Research, Development & Demonstration) during the next five years through public-private investment. 
  • It aims to fill the void by identifying gaps and challenges in current biorefining value chains, prioritizing Eight key actions to support the Mission and guiding the Mission’s overall path in achieving its goal.
  • Dr Jitendra Singh said that a pilot plant of 10 Tons/day capacity plant with integrated enzyme production is being set up at Panipat Haryana, which will be commissioned by December 2022. This will be the 1st indigenous technology for on-site enzyme production. 
  • During the conference, India agreed to reach 500-Gigawatt non-fossil energy capacity and reduce carbon intensity of the economy by 45% over 2005 levels and achieve net zero emissions by 2070.

Dilip Tirkey was appointed as President of Hockey India

Former Indian men’s team captain Dilip Tirkey was elected as the new Hockey India (HI) president. He was elected unopposed. 

Bhola Nath has been elected unopposed as secretary general.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has approved Tirkey and his team’s appointments. 

Dilip Tirkey, represented India at three Olympic Games and was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok and silver at the 2012 edition. 

He was also part of the team which won gold medals in the 2003 and 2007 editions of the Asia Cup.

Hemkosh becomes first Braille dictionary in South-east Asia

South-East Asia’s first Braille version of the prestigious Assamese dictionary “Hemkosh” was formally launched at a program held at the Vivekananda Kendra in Guwahati. 

The dictionary was launched by the Sadin Pratidin Group to give a new dimension to the Assamese language with an aim to help in improving the educational quality of visually impaired children in the state.

Sarbananda Sonowal, the minister for ports, shipping, and waterways, as well as other officials, were present on this occasion. The dictionary was formally presented to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. 

The first Assamese language dictionary “Hemkosh” was first published in 1919 by Hem Chandra Baruwa.


Government of Assam will use portable device ‘SAANS’ to prevent neonatal deaths

The Assam government has decided to utilize the air pressure machine ‘SAANS,’ in all of its hospitals to minimize infant mortality 

SAANS’ is a portable neonatal Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) system built by a Bangalore-based start-up.  

Key Points

  • The machine can provide lifesaving breathing support to infants in hospital settings as well as during travel. 
  • More than 50 SAANS devices have been deployed across medical colleges in Assam to date with more deployments underway to district hospitals. 
  • InnAccel Technologies, incubated at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), partnered with the SAMRIDH Healthcare Blended Finance Facility to build the equipment to improve respiratory assistance for babies and paediatric populations in Assam.
  • SAMRIDH is a multi-stakeholder innovation and funding platform operated by IPE Global and supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
  • The partnership between InnAccel, C-CAMP, and SAMRIDH, with backing from the National Health Mission, , Assam and the Government of Assam will help deploy 307 units of SAANS in the state. 
  • The distribution of these machines is projected to cover practically all of the state’s current demand for respiratory support technology.

Bhaichung Bhutia becomes new president of Hamro Sikkim Party

Legendary footballer Bhaichung Bhutia has been recently elected as the new president of the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP). He was elected by party leaders and members at a national conference.

Bhutia pledged to put endless effort to serve the people of Sikkim and represent their hopes and aspirations.

He said “We shall make unending efforts to ensure social equality and justice and provide limitless possibilities for every Sikkimese to realize the full potential of our state,” 

He also expressed gratitude towards the outgoing HSP president Bina Basnett for successfully completing her tenure of three years.


India will host next Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in 2023

The rotational presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been handed over to India in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The next meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State will be held in India in 2023.

Delhi will hold the presidency of the grouping for a year until September 2023. Next year, India will take over as the next Chair of SCO from Uzbekistan and will also host the summit. 

During the SCO Summit, the Member States noted the various global challenges and threats in the global economy. They expressed deep concern over the security threat posed by terrorism, separatism and extremism and strongly condemned terrorist acts around the world.

They will seek to develop common principles and approaches to form a unified list of terrorist, separatist and extremist organizations whose activities are prohibited on the territories of the SCO member states. 

The Member States also made commitments to build a sustainable economic system by promoting green and environmentally friendly technologies.

In the Samarkand Declaration, the member states supported the efforts of the countries of the region to ensure prosperity, peace and sustainable development. They advocated strengthening the role of SCO in enhancing stability and socio-economic development in the region.

Science magazine ‘Vigyan Pragati’, received the National Rajbhasha Kirti Award

CSIR’s (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) popular science magazine ‘Vigyan Pragati Received the National Rajbhasha Kirti Award (first position). 

Vigyan Pragati is one of India’s most popular science magazines. It is popular among children, teachers, researchers, and the public across India as well as the world. 

Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) started publishing this magazine in 1952. It carries a legacy of seven decades and over these many years.

This monthly Hindi publication imparts the knowledge of the recent national-international S&T related developments. The magazine contents aim at igniting curiosity about science among the young and strive to develop an interest in them to pursue science. 

Rajbhasha Kirti Award was introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs. which aims to encourage the implementation of the Official Language Policy. It is given on the day of Hindi Diwas. 


Andaman and Nicobar Islands become India’s first Swachh Sujal Pradesh

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has declared Andaman and Nicobar Islands as India’s first Swachh Sujal Pradesh.

With this achievement, all the villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands have received the Har Ghar Jal certification and also have been verified as ODF (open defecation free) and ODF Plus.

Government of Sikkim hikes minimum wage by 67%

The Sikkim government hiked the minimum wage for unskilled workers by 67 percent to Rs 500. 

Key Points

  • The daily wage for unskilled laborers was Rs 300 which is now increased to Rs 500 with retrospective effect from 11th July 2022.
  • The daily wage for semi-skilled workers was increased to Rs 520 from Rs 320, while skilled workers will get Rs 535 instead of Rs 335.
  • Highly skilled labor will be paid Rs 565 per day, instead of Rs 365 per day. 
  • These updated wages will be applicable for laborers who are working at altitudes up to 8,000 feet, while 50 percent more wages will be given to those working at altitudes from 8,001 feet to 12,000 feet. 
  • The laborers working in the altitudes of 12,001 feet to 16,000 feet will be paid 75 percent more than the normal wage. The laborers working at places above 16,001 feet will get double the normal wage.
  • The new rates would be effective from July 11, 2022, and the labourers will be given arrears.  

The Kibithu military camp was renamed as Gen Bipin Rawat Military 

Kibithu, A military station on the banks of Arunachal’s Lohit Valley along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has been renamed as ‘Gen Bipin Rawat military garrison’ in honour of the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who was killed in a chopper crash. 

The camp was renamed as Gen Bipin Rawat Military Garrison wherein a grand gate constructed in accordance with the region’s traditional architectural style was inaugurated by the Governor. 

The 22-km road stretch connecting Walong and Kibithu was also named as Gen Bipin Rawat Marg by the Chief Minister. 


India’s First Forest University will be Established in Telangana

India’s First Forest University will be Established in Telangana. The Telangana legislative assembly approved the University of Forestry (UOF) Act 2022.  

Key Points 

  • As per the act, The University of Forestry (UoF) will be India’s first of its kind. It will be the third University of Forestry in the world, following Russia and China.
  • The Telangana Govt decided to expand the Forestry College and Research Institute (FCRI) in Hyderabad.
  • Once the FCRI is upgraded to University, it will have additional programmes including a PhD, diploma, and certificate courses in Urban Forestry, Nursery Management, Agro-Forestry, Tribal livelihood enhancement, Forest entrepreneurship, Climate-smart Forestry & Forest Parks Management. 
  • The University’s goals will be to promote research and development of appropriate methods for propagation of plantation crops to meet industry demand.
  • The university will also work to develop Agro-Forestry models suitable for different Agro-ecological situations to reduce pressure on natural forests, economic upliftment of farming communities, and enhance ecological conditions.
  • Under the flagship program ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram,’ the Telangana government has planted 268.83 crore saplings.

Indore will become the first Indian city with ‘Smart Addresses’

Indore will become the country’s first Smart City with ‘Smart Addresses’. The Memorandum of Understanding is signed by Rajat Jain, co-founder of Pataa Navigations, and Rishav Gupta (IAS), CEO of Indore Smart City for implementing a fully digital addressing system.

  • Pataa has developed patented technology and is working with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to develop a digital addressing system for the nation. 
  • Pataa is a brief and distinctive code, comparable to KUMAR100, SINGH221, or other commonly used codes, that will help the user find the specific geotagged location.
  • Users of the Pataa App can upload images of their homes, landmarks, etc., along with their addresses in full text.

  • Pataa Navigation will integrate with government platforms like those for the departments of electricity, agriculture, excise, women and child welfare, and education. 
  • The Pataa App is a free service and aims to help delivery providers find a specific geotagged location.
  • Government agencies and emergency services including police, fire department, and ambulance will use the Pataa app.
  • This app will help in necessary services like E-KYC and banking geotagging. It can be accessible to everyone at the business.
  • All significant public assets, including bus stops, light poles, public restrooms, and bus stops, should have digital address numbers pasted on them. 
  • This app will also be essential for bringing down Indore’s pollution levels.

World’s largest museum of Harappan culture will be built in Rakhigarhi

The world’s largest museum of Harappan culture will be built in Rakhigarhi, Haryana. Rakhigarhi is a famous archaeological site from the Indus Valley civilisation period.

  • The museum on Harappan culture in Rakhigarhi would showcase some 5,000-year-old artefacts belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. 
  • The museum would give recognition to Rakhigarhi at the international and national levels and increase job opportunities for the local communities. 
  • This world class museum would display photographs depicting Rakhigarhi’s history and would also house an open-air theatre and a library.

HDFC Bank issues first Electronic Bank Guarantee in India

HDFC Bank became the first bank in India to issue an Electronic Bank Guarantee (e-BG) in collaboration with the National E-Governance Services Limited (NeSL).

Key Points

  • Electronic Bank Guarantee (e-BG) has been developed to simplify the process and eliminate the possibility of fraud and manipulation. 
  • e-BG will be issued on the NeSL portal through an API-based digital workflow. 
  • eStamping has replaced physical stamping and with e-BG, the applicant and beneficiary can immediately view a bank guarantee on the NeSL portal.
