India ranked 132nd on the Human Development Index (HDI) 2021

India ranks 132 out of 191 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI) 2021. The index is a part of the Human Development Report 2021-2022 released by the United Nations Development Programme.

The HDI measures average achievement of a country in three basic dimensions of human development — a long and healthy life, education and a decent standard of living.

It is calculated using four indicators — life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, and the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.

Key Highlights of the Report

  • The index has been topped by Switzerland with (0.962) HDI value followed by Norway (0.961) and Iceland (0.959).
  • India’s HDI value stood at 0.633 in 2021, which was lower than the world average of 0.732. In 2020, too, India recorded a decline in its HDI value (0.642) in comparison to the pre-Covid level of 2019 (0.645).
  • In 2021, India’s life expectancy at birth was recorded at 67.2 years. Schooling: Expected years of schooling at 11.9 years, mean years of schooling at 6.7 years,
  • The gross national income per capita stood at USD 6,590. Gender Inequality Index: India has been ranked 122 on the Gender Inequality Index.
  • A large contributor to the HDI’s recent decline is a global drop in life expectancy, down from 72.8 years in 2019 to 71.4 years in 2021.
  • The key reasons behind the decline in Human Development in the last two years are the crises the world faced. This included COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine coupled with social and economic shifts and dangerous planetary changes.

IIT Guwahati developed a new method for making sugar substitute “Xylitol”

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed an ultrasound-assisted fermentation method to produce a safe sugar substitute called ‘Xylitol’ from sugarcane bagasse (the residue left after crushing of sugarcane).

This method overcomes the operational limitations of chemical methods of synthesis and the time delays associated with conventional fermentation.

The IIT Guwahati researchers used two approaches to overcome the two problems:

First, they used sugarcane bagasse, the waste fibrous material produced after extracting juice from sugarcane, as the raw material. This overcomes the cost limitations of current xylitol synthesis methods and provides a method to upcycle a waste product.

Secondly, they used a new type of fermentation process wherein, the microbe-induced synthesis of xylitol is hastened by the application of ultrasound waves.

The use of ultrasound during the fermentation process not only reduced the time of fermentation to 15 hours, but also increased the yield of the product by almost 20%.

There has been an increase in the use of safe alternative sweeteners as awareness of the negative effects of white sugar (sucrose) on individuals with diabetes and general health has grown.

A sugar alcohol generated from plants called xylitol may have anti-obesogenic and anti-diabetic properties in addition to being a mild prebiotic and guarding teeth against caries.

India ranks 4th in ‘Forbes Asia best under a billion’

Forbes Asia has published its 2022 edition of the best 200 mid-sized companies in the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2022, India ranks 4th in Forbes Asia best under a billion with 24 Indian firms down from 26 in 2021.

Key Points

  • Taiwan has the greatest number of companies listed at 30, followed by Japan with 29 and South Korea has 27.
  • The unranked list was compiled from a long list of over 20,000 publicly traded companies in the Asia-Pacific region with annual sales of above USD10 million but less than USD1 billion.
  • The objective of the list is to identify companies with long-term sustainable performance across a variety of metrics.
  • A composite score was created using data collected in such areas as debt, sales, and earnings-per-share growth over both the most recent fiscal one- and three-year periods, and the strongest one and five-year average return on equity.
  • Forbes used full-year annual results, based on the latest publicly available figures as of July 11, 2022.
  • Companies with serious governance issues, questionable accounting, environmental concerns, management issues, or legal troubles were excluded, and so were state-controlled firms and subsidiaries of larger companies.
